Spain quip adds to Romney's foreign policy trouble

Good Lord! Looks like we have another "W" wannabe on our hands.

What is it about Republicans and their 'cowboy' mentality. Could it be Romney (if he is elected POTUS) has already planned a pre-emptive attack on some sovereign-nation he might perceive as one of our great enemies?

Spain quip adds to Romney's foreign policy trouble - Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON (AP) — If Mitt Romney becomes president, he might need a crash course in Diplomacy 101.

He irritated Britons and Palestinians during a summer tour abroad and has declared Russia to be America's No. 1 geopolitical foe. Just last week, the Republican candidate, who plans a foreign policy speech Monday, raised eyebrows in Spain by holding it up as a prime example of government spending run amok...

First...Anyone with a functioning brain cell knows Romney's comment is spot on.
Second, who gives a shit if a few Spaniards got their noses out of joint...If they did and no one is admitting that given the absence of an official statement from Madrid..
Lastly, the story you linked is an OPINION PIECE...It is NOT news.

That is because all conservatives know -- and so Fox News told them -- that Europe periphery troubles are result of their governments fiscal prolificacy.

Ok..So if not the policies of their respective governments, then what?
Taxes not confiscatory enough?...Still too many rich people? Government does not spend enough? Unions do not represent enough workers? Too many people unemployed? Not enough subsidies so that less well off people can attend college?
Tell us what the REAL problems are...Genius

oh brother, what is their troubles, the people?
good grief

Their trouble is common currency. European Central Bank policy cannot be optimal for different countries, so it has been tailoring it for Germany. That created wage inflation on the periphery during the boom years, and now they have to adjust rapidly trough high unemployment -- which means low government revenues and high deficits.
So the Euro is to blame. How convenient.

Spain with 25% unemployment of young people and the #2 debt size in Europe behind Greece....isn't a shining example of anything.

France could probably invade Spain and win.

If something is convenient, it does not mean it is not real. Monetary policy is the cornerstone of any country economic success, and Spain gave it up.

As for conservatives blaming the government spending for everything, it's just plain stupid.

Right, because the Hussein's foreing policy of whispering to the Russians that he'll be more "flexible", letting Muslims overrun our embassies and kill ambassadors, and doing nothing about Iran getting a nuclear weapon is clearly the best path for America.

Seriously libtards, pull your heads out of your asses.

What did he say that came as a surprise to you?

Romney did not surprise being ignorant. But his statement is untrue -- Spainish government has been austere even before the crisis, in fact it run surpluses. Then the economy tanked and the government revenues shrank as well. Same thing happened here -- why do you think US has been running trillion+ deficits since the crisis hit in 2008?

Not entirely accurate. Mismanagement, cheap credit and an absence of planning were the source of Spain's present difficulties.

Absence of planning? You think that country official name is Spanish Soviet Socialist Republic? :)

What Spain had was typical for any booming economy, and it seems excessive only in hindsight. Germans gave Spaniards cheap credit because they both belied that future is bright. That mirrors what happened in the US during the housing boom.

But the government spending had nothing to do with it in both countries.

Spain is a welfare failure. So is Greece, so it Italy. France is determined to ruin its economy with socialist programs as well.

Pointing out that Spain has failed is an honest assessment.

Spain's new leader is conservative. Let's see what he does about the problem.

And what about Germany or Sweden? They both have bigger welfare state than Spain, but they both are doing very well recently.

Spain troubles have nothing to do with welfare state or excessive government spending -- those are right-wing lies pure and simple, and Romney is just stupid enough to repeat them in public.

Germany has had a right-wing leaning leader in recent years and they have implemented more changes in their welfare system because of foreign people moving there to get a handout.

The German people have always been the hardest working people in Europe, that is how they were able to dominate Europe in WWII before the US put them back in their place.

Spain, Italy and Greece are full of lazier people than the hardier people of the north.

It is ....Government spending..Or more accurately, overspending is the number one reason for economic malaise. Period.
Your side believes everything begins and ends with government. To fund that, your side believes all but what is necessary to just survive should go to government.
Clearly, the is wrong thinking. Why? Given government's track record of waste fraud and abuse of taxpayer resources, it comes as no surprise the majority of Americans support smaller government with balanced budgets.
The majority of the population are capitalists. That is most of us want to keep as much of what we earn as possible. Most of us are well aware that it is necessary to pay taxes to fund government. Most of us however, see government as wasteful and unresponsive to the will of the people. Especially when we think the government is doing it wrong.
You people believe the way to fix overspending and waste is to funnel MORE money to government. This is the same thing as giving a fat person who wishes to lose weight, more to eat.
Both can define insanity. Doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result.
I find it amusing how people who have lived in blue states their entire lives will bitch and moan about high taxes, road congestion and political corruption. Most of these people ( statistically) get a case of amnesia when they get to their local polling place. This is evident in that they keep voting for the people that got them there in the first place. That is also a definition of insanity.

Germany is also funding or rather floating the rest of the Euro-Zone. In other words, of all the EU nations, only Germany the UK(only EU country that maintains it's original currency) and France( about to tip into severe economic problems due to excessive social spending) are in a position to help the Euro Central Bank and thus bail out the other EU nations. The rest are in severe trouble. Again, mostly due to excessive social spending and confiscatory taxation.

Germany always had bigger welfare state and more generous social programs that Spain.

I will be looking for you to put that into the proper context.
Because based on your logic the USA is the largest welfare state in the world. Get it?
Nice try at attempting to rise to the level of snarky.

Fox News? C'mon, you can do better than that.
Why is it that you libs have to use "Faux News" Fox Snooze" or other childish monikers you wish to use, as a fall back position?
First, what makes you think the alphabets are any less biased?
What makes you think you have the gall to tell others from where to get their news?
I submit that MSNBC and CNN are merely deliver liberal editorials and no news at all. ABC CBS NBC The NY Times, Wash PO, Gannett and Knight Ridder are not far behind.
So please, do not be so presumptuous as to believe you can tell others from where to get their news as your sources have one thing in common. That is while FOX does not pretend to be center right while your news outlets when challenged on their obvious liberal bias act aghast with shock when called out for their editorial lefty-ness...
BTW if you think Germany floats the EZ, then why post that stupid welfare comment?
It's not logical.

Spain is so poorly governed that the entire north-east region of the country has threatened to create a new country. Can't get worse than that.

Catalunya's perrenial desire for independence goes back a long time and has little to do with the present situation or government. The Basque country is actually a greater problem.

Overall ignorance re Spain and world history is astounding. Romney (tho yes he did "win" the debate) exposed his ignorance of foreign affairs yet again with his reference to Spain. Spain's current crisis is primarily due to a housing bubble that started earlier and was much bigger than ours. Compared with much of Europe, the Spanish govt is not a big spender; and its foolish policy of austerity just made everything worse.

Spain's woes are Europe's woes, and Europe's woes are ours. If just one of the banking giants in Spain collapsed (which wont happen), we would all suffer.

My point was that you are so brainwashed, you cannot think for himself anymore. If Germany has more generous social programs than Spain, then you cannot blame the welfare state for eurozone troubles. A 5-year-old would get, but not your brainwashed brains.
