Thomas Sowell is easily one of the finest minds this country is lucky enough to have in it's borders, leave it to him to set things straight when it comes to judging a Presidency.

Oh shit! He's a black man....... never mind.:lol::lol:

The Bush Legacy
by Thomas Sowell

Whatever history's verdict on the Bush administration might be, it is likely to be very different from what we hear from the talking heads on television or read from the know-it-alls on editorial pages.

President Bush's number one achievement was also the number one function of government-- to protect its citizens. Nobody on September 11, 2001 believed that there would never be another such attack for more than seven years.

Unfortunately, people who are protected from dangers often conclude that there are no dangers. This is most painfully visible among those Americans who are hysterical over the government's intercepting international phone calls, in order to disrupt international terrorist networks.

Many, especially among the intelligentsia, are also obsessed with whether we are being nice enough to the cut-throats locked up at Guantanamo, some of whom have already been turned loose to resume a life of terrorism. The rights of the Geneva Convention do not apply to people who neither obey the Geneva Convention nor are covered by the Geneva Convention.

That a President of the United States protected us from deadly enemies may not seem like much of an accomplishment to some. But it may be more fully appreciated when we get a President who eases up on that protection, in order to curry favor at home and abroad.

We can only hope that it will not take the sight of an American city lying in radioactive ruins to wake people up to the dangers that George W. Bush protected us against, despite an unending chorus of carping.

No one in his right mind would say that the Bush administration was flawless. But many of their worst political mistakes were the kinds of mistakes that decent people often make when dealing with indecent people, both domestically and internationally.

The idea with which President Bush arrived in Washington, that he could gain bipartisan support by going along with the Democrats, and not vetoing any bills that Congress passed, ignored the fact that it takes two to tango.

Having proclaimed his goal as bipartisanship, it was he who was blamed when the bipartisanship failed to materialize. Wooing Ted Kennedy and going along with massive government spending did not stop Kennedy from getting up in the Senate and loudly proclaiming that Bush "lied, and lied and lied!" about Iraq.

Whatever the merits or demerits of going to war against Saddam Hussein, the question whether he had weapons of mass destruction immediately at hand makes a better talking point than a serious argument. Continued...

Leave it to a Republican to point out that Americans aren't scared enough.

Leave it to a dumb shit to not grasp we are in a war where one side wants us all dead or so cowed we just let them murder and brutalize anyone they please. I suggest you convert now to Islam so that if you idiots actually get what you want you will, while with many rights removed, still be accepted by your new masters.

The idiots that are still living in a September 10th, 2001 world were the ones stupid enough to elect a naive dimwit from Kenya that is in the same time warp. It's not about being scared, it's about being aware of the threats to civilized people everywhere. I would just as soon move Israel to west Texas and turn that shithole known as the middle east into a big slab of glass, fuck them.

It sounds as though it is all about being scared.

The two of you need to come out of your bomb shelters and look at the world as it really is.

The Muslims are not coming.

The overwhelming majority of Muslims think that al-Qa'ida and the like are a bunch of pathetic circus freaks. Al-Qa'ida means "the base" -- they were going to build the base which would grow into a gigantic caliphate stretching from northern Africa to the Phillippines. But they have totally failed to sell their crap even to the most illiterate, uneducated, poverty-stricken, brain-dead Muslims. Even in Iran, people want satellite dishes and HBO, not jihad. Even in the darkest parts of Pashtun Afghanistan, little girls in the hundreds are braving Taleban attacks to go to school, all with the support of their parents.

The only people who actually swallow the radical Islam nonsense are...guys like you. People who don't think things through, and are easily frightened. Bush and bin Laden are two sides of the same coin -- they both know that frightened people are easily manipulated, like sheep. Which is just what any political leader wants.

Come on, fellas. Give us a hearty "Baaaaaah".

Point made, living in the past.

Point made, you're not living in the real world.

Turn off Fox and come out of the bomb shelter.

Bush has done more catastrophic damage to America than a dozen bin Ladens could do. The greatest threat to us, is us. Or more specifically, people like you.

I don't know that we should be scared, as I don't not believe in living in fear, no matter the situation. But, we do need to be concerned and respect the facts which surround the threats to us. I think the article was fairly written and spoke to a lot on the facts. I'm not a Bush fan, but, in turn like him or not, he did protect our borders well since 9/11.

Thomas Sowell is a partisan right winger and his writings reflect that. Not a problem being a rightie, he just isn't the frigging genius you give him credit for.

After reading his post here, it just confirms what I wrote.

If he protected US so well, then Clinton did even better. We had nothing of the magnitude of 9-11 under his watch. The logic used would then say that Bush fucked up because 9-11 happened under his watch after he was warned that Bin Laden planned an attack on US soil. After he failed to heed his daily briefings.

The absence of something happening doesn't really prove anyone stopped it from happening without some form of substantive evidence. Prove that attacking Iraq, torturing captives (terrorist or not) spying on American citizen, violating the FISA law, fucking up in Afghanistan made US safer and was the reasons that we weren't hit again.

Please keep playing the shit head right wing card that only your side cares about US being safe. More crap from the faux patriots.

This is amazing!

I'm surprised to learn that a republican who voted for bush twice, and thought the iraq war was a great idea, wrote an article saying that george junior will be judged a great president,

Will wonders never cease!

Wow.. I guess maybe everyone has been ALL WRONG in their judgement about the response the world saw from Muslim communities after 9/11. We must have just misunderstood what dancing in the streets meant. And all those mobs demonstrating in the streets and setting buildings on fire after some newspapers published a few drawings of Mohammed must really have been displaying a level of sophistication and tolerance that the non muslim world hasn't ascended to yet.

Could you do us a favor and please detail EXACTLY what catastrophic damage George Bush has done to this nation?

So he must REALLY like Clinton then. No major attacks in America after that first one a few days into his presidency.

Clinton was the man!

The trouble with your argument is that the facts don't back you up. Polls in the middle eastern countries don't say that the man on the street thinks that bin Laden is a circus freak, they say they support him and AQ in varying degrees of majority.

We'll just leave aside the Major attacks on American interests at Kobar Towers, the USS Cole, the Kenyan embassy so that you can have your point.

This is the funny thing. When you guys talk about Bush, you leave out all the terrorist attacks all over the world that happened, how ever "our interests" as you call them are included. But with Clinton they are in. There were attacks all over the world, too many to name in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Phillippines, Jordan and of course in Iraq and Afganistan, but that's ok, Igues.

Can't you guys get your argument straight?
