China is giving their leaders a tour of the Great Wall while trump is levying tariffs on these poor nations.

Who could have predicted that maga hostility would have driven these guys into a celestial embrace ?

But remember that Latin America is short on natural assets and strategically unimportant. Its just some place south of the Gulf of America.

Not a defense of Trump, but when Xi decides that the South China Sea extends all the way to Easter Island, they will regret jumping into bed with him.

I doubt Don is to blame for this, though he might be increasing it. Decades of US interventions and imperialism causing numerous problems, but benefiting US corporations and politicians might have something to do with increasing ties to China.

Will South America send China their illegals? That's a win.

In sales, there's always a couple different types of salespeople. Whale hunters. Guys who land the Ford account or GM account and if anything happens to that account, they are done. And guys like me who don't go after the whales. I go for the small/medium size companies. That way when I lose a customer, I don't feel it. And these smaller companies don't expect the big discounts like the whales do. I would not want to lose South America's business. But Trump is going to lose us business.

In the first semester of 2023, the United States exported $55 billion in services to Latin America and the Caribbean, while imports were $45 billion. This resulted in a service trade surplus of $11 billion for the US in the region. In terms of goods, Latin America and the Caribbean imported $453.7 billion worth of goods from the US, making the US their largest import partner.

I believe in 2027, 2 years from now, you are going to see they trade less with us than before and more with China. Republicans think this is a good thing.

Trump doesnt include services in his calculations.

Tell me what the number is not including services. The point I was trying to make is we are going to lose customers because of Trump. I already have. I notice less purchases from my Mexican and Canadian customers. One told me "yes, I have to look for another vendor just in case Trump follows through".

There is a lomg history of the US meffling in these countries. Remember the support of pinochet.
I might be a damned leftist but I wonder if exploitation serves the US in the long run.
Would it not be better to have strong democracies in place with wealthy citizens.
It would mitigate the migration and provide a growing market for US services.
Just a thought.

People need to protect their livelihood.China is an obvious partner.

But thats a possible future threat.Trump is a present one. Putin will blow up the world before China expands anyway.

You make a false assumption. The powers that be don’t care about developing strong democracies. Nor do they care about developing a strong middle class in Latin America or anywhere else. They would care if they believed in morality and equality, as we do.

They do care greatly about generating enormous wealth for a few people running these large predatory corporations raping Latin America.

The US is notorious for overthrowing democracies in Latin America and installing right wing dictators, who allow big US corporations free reign. This has resulted in untold thousands of innocent deaths and destruction of economies and opportunity.

You should know this, since your country has a long history of doing the exact same thing.

My nephew is a typical stupid voter. I mean it makes sense. If they charge us a 30% tariff, we should do the same, right? WRONG

They tariff stuff they want to make internally. Those things are vital to their countries financial security. So the answer isn't to make them do away with all tariffs.

But for a stupid typical voter, that does make sense. Just don't try to discuss details because they can't think beyond the idea that if they charge us 30%, we should charge it back. Such dopes. I'm talking about most Republican voters.

Same with the drug prices. Of course drug companies charge us more than 3rd world countries who can't afford to pay what we pay. If Trump doesn't like a progressive drug price, then I'm sure he's going to try to move us to a flat tax right? Where everyone pays the exact same percentage? Why haven't we done that before? Must be a reason.

But to my cousin, I'm sure a flat tax makes perfect sense.

The Uk is the master at this.

Maybe diplomacy is best conducted in quiet rooms and not in time for the 6 o clock news,

Trump has no interest in South America. They haven't indicted him for anything or denied him a resort permit.

My wife is from Peru. Her father was a master machinist who worked for an American mining company. Her father and his Peruvian buddies really enjoyed working for that company and said the Americans ran a tight ship, with great pay and good benefits. Some years after he retired China bought out the American mining company along with many other factories in industries in Peru. And according to my father-in-law those places absolutely suck to work for now. I don't know about the Peruvian leaders but I do know that the average Peruvian person would love to see China pull the f**k out of there, as they feel Chinese influence has brought down their quality of life. And just like we have Democrats here who are eager to sell our country out to the Chinese they have political factions there that do the same thing. Those are probably the ones touring China right now.
