May people used to flock to the profession. It is an honorable profession with the promise of a 1%er payday.

That is not necessarily the case anymore. First it take a long time to get the through med school. Second the cost of med school leaves the doctor $400-$500k in the hole with student loans (not including $100-$150k for under grad). Then the new doctor gets paid $30-$50k as a resident for the next few years. After 8 of school and residency they can now get a job. A job is pretty much guaranteed, but the payday is not. It is being reported many doctors start out making little more than $100k and work for years to get to $300k. Yer many don't even get over $200k.

Money should be the only motivator, but the length and cost of schools are driving many of our best and brightest to other professions. A doctor shortage is inevitable!

Ah, but socialized medicine will solve any shortage.

The socialist government will simply require aptitude testing in all high schools. Any student showing a high aptitude for medicine will be interred in forced medical education - drafted, if you will - then, upon completion, forced to work in government hospitals.

You'll love being cared for by a doctor who doesn't want to be one!

Because, if you don't, you'll be denied all medical care as an enemy of the state.

Don't kid yourselves , doctors are making a killing ! They all join these big medical groups and socialized medicine means guaranteed payments .

Red herring and a different argument. Obviously SM will make of worse.

Off topic, but socialized medicine would mean far longer hours, far inferior facilities for far less pay! The shortage would only increase.

I guess you have not been a doctor who was trained/educated in India or China or europe? These are the ones making medicine today.

By "socialized " I mean non private coverage .

In US we have private and then public for those who don't have private available .

You know that is not true. Rich Europeans and Asians still come here for treatment

In order to make socialized medicine work it would be necessary to ban private practices and make attempting to leave The U.S. for medical treatment a felony punishable by forced incarceration in an Emergency care waiting room.
