Russia will build up forces in the Chukotka Peninsula in its northeast in order to boost security along the Northern Sea Route and defend against threats in the Arctic, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said, Interfax reported Feb. 26. Russia’s military build-up in the Arctic region, whose natural resources and transit lanes make it strategically important, is a concern to the surrounding Arctic countries.
