Iran named vice-chair of UN body promoting democracy, women’s rights
UNITED NATIONS: Iran’s election as vice-chair of the United Nations Commission for Social Development is being slammed by human rights advocates and policy analysts, who have condemned the U.N.'s hypocrisy when it comes to its treatment of undemocratic regimes.Simply stated, Iran was elected it to serve as a member on the Committee for Program and Coordination (CPC). This body shapes policies on human rights, women’s rights, disarmament, and terrorism prevention.
How could Iran be nominated to be on a committee on Woman's Rights?
Here is what I think is happening and it is not just an issue affecting the UN, but an issue affecting the entire world. It is a loss of common sense worldwide.
Why could this be happening?
Here is the likely answer:
Is the World Losing Its Common Sense?
There is growing concern that common sense — the practical, reasoned understanding of how the world works — is being eroded globally, not because people are “dumber,” but because the conditions that foster it are changing. Why It’s Happening
1. Technology and Instant AnswersIn the past, common sense was built through experience, observation, and trial-and-error. Today, GPS, AI, and instant search tools provide answers in seconds, reducing the need to reason through problems. This can weaken situational awareness and critical thinking, as people rely on devices rather than their own judgment
2. Information Overload and Negativity Bias
We are bombarded with 100,000–150,000 words a day, much of it sensational or negative. Social media amplifies conflict and outrage, making it seem like kindness and reason are declining when, in reality, positive and cooperative behaviors may be underreported
3. Tribalism and Echo Chambers
Online platforms reward engagement, often through outrage and confirmation bias. This creates “digital echo chambers” where belonging trumps truth-seeking, and misinformation spreads faster than fact-based reasoning
4. Stress and Social Pressures
Rising stress levels, urbanization, and fast-paced lifestyles can impair patience and empathy, making it harder to act with kindness or sound judgment
5. Education and Social-Emotional Skills
Some education systems focus heavily on technical skills at the expense of social-emotional learning, which includes empathy, cooperation, and problem-solving
The Bigger Picture
From a sociopolitical perspective, common sense is tied to a shared understanding of how society and institutions work. When this understanding erodes — due to misinformation, polarization, or loss of trust — it can weaken cohesion and decision-makingThe “Stupidity Epidemic” Analogy
Critics describe this as a “stupidity epidemic” — not a drop in IQ, but a collapse of independent thought. Factors like digital addiction, misinformation normalisation, and the Dunning-Kruger effect (where uninformed people overestimate their knowledge) are accelerating the problem
