The MAGA Movement’s Links With The Global Far Right Were On Full Display At Trump’s Latest Party

As a tuxedoed former President Donald Trump stood on a stage in Manhattan on Saturday night and doubled down on past quips about being a “dictator,” at least one member of the audience had real ties to actual historical dictatorships.

The crowd who gathered at the swank Cipriani Wall Street for the New York Young Republican Club’s annual gala included Gerald Grosz, an Austrian politician and former presidential candidate who has been part of a political party founded by Nazis and who has deep ties to a late leader who often praised the Third Reich. Grosz was one of several figures from the European far right who attended the event and have previously associated with the club that hosted Trump.

The scene was a precise encapsulation of the way Trump and his allies have embraced the global far right and authoritarian rhetoric as he runs to retake the White House. It also nodded at the irony in Trump and his allies’ insistence that his strongman bluster shouldn’t be taken seriously, even as they eagerly expect four years of vendettas and aggression.

Outside the MAGA bubble, fears of a Trump dictatorship are fueled by his own campaign platform, including the potentially criminal efforts to overturn and question the last election, his vows to crush political enemies, or as he has called them “vermin,” promises to use the military to quash protest, and vows to suppress the press.

You can't put lipstick on a pig but you can put a tux on someone who consorts with fascists. Someone who is openly envious of the control dictators and despots exert over their countries. Someone who counts Duterte, Putin, Orban, and Xi as role models.

What does one do with the talk of dictatorial edicts, promises of extra-legal retribution, invoking the Insurrection Act, past examples displaying Don's willingness to use the DoJ to go after perceived enemies, and alter election results? How do you rationalize your support for a figure who makes no secret of an affinity for the world's authoritarians?

Maybe we have reached the point when MAGAists don't feel the need to make excuses. They simply point to the polls and proudly say they can't wait for Jack Smith to be thrown in jail. They can't wait for Kash Patel to order troops in to NYC to arrest protestors. They can't wait for Attorney General James Comer to vacate all the federal indictments of Trump. Let the anarchy come. They can't wait.

It appears that the various Alt Right authoritarian movements around the world are identifying the strongman types that fit the template, and are learning from each other. And that includes clownish, aggressive behavior as a replacement for intelligent, civil statesmanship.
Research material on how authoritarian movements begin is readily available. The reasons include concerns/frustration with employment, social disruption, external threats (like immigration from ME countries in to Europe), fear of fast paced change.

There were fascist stirrings in the US during and after the Depression. Roosevelt was worried about the extent to which they would take root here due to the great suffering by the public and anger at the status quo.

I used to think America was insulated from such movements. I've been proven wrong.

Yeah, me too.

Combine desperation (brought on by decades of talk radio, in our case) with the right demagogue and willing well-placed enablers, and you have a real and present danger.

No way this was possible here. No way.

What a stupid post
Trump got 74 million votes. even if 5000 attended this event you are stating a GODAWFUL STUPID STATISTICAL CLAIM, that 0.01% can be representative of anything , IT CANNOT

I always wondered how first world countries like Italy and a Germany could devolve into dictatorship.

After the last ten years or so I no longer do.

There is always a segment of the population who feel aggrieved and yearn for a “strong leader” to empower them.

Here we have an example of the rationalization process being developed. Giving Trump cover for the suspension of democratic norms. Because, "he has no choice." If Dems fill their traditional role as the political opposition to Trump they and the millions of Americans they represent must be marginalized. It's the embodiment of authoritarian rule.

Italy seems especially vulnerable to "strongman" leadership. They recently elected a fascist.

The enablers have been key. Based on public comments Repub leadership seemed ready to turn away from Trump after 1/6. Then came the astonishing realization the base was still with him. It was a real life 5th Ave. moment when folks like McCarthy finally understood the depth of the fidelity to Dear Leader. It's positively frightening.

More than anyone else, I blame the Republicans in Congress. Then the talk radio/media types.

Every so-called alt right strongman type that even sniffs at fiscal responsibility is called every name in the book. Every civilization in history has collapsed with what we are doing. Wars come from this. A lot of people die. Mass poverty. Keeping the Fiat Currency under control was important. We did not. Massive deficits are not free. Somewhere there is an affect. And that means other nations from our irresponsible ways as well as theirs also.

I've gotta go with the base of what is now completely the POT. It's the base that could have put the fear of losing their job in to POT congressmen right after 147 of them voted to support Trump's failed coup immediately following the Capital riot.

It was then that the spin machine went in to full gear with disinformation and revisionist history. The rioters were turned in to heroes, Tucker Carlson blamed the FBI, participants became tourists, and the distortion of reality has continued ever since.

Thank god we have Trump cuz he alone can fix it. And he promised he would. He said his tax cut was going to eliminate the debt in 10 years. Ooooppps.

lol, do you all really believe that trump will try and be a dictator? How exactly will that work? He’s going to stand on stage and say “ok, now I’m a dictator”, and the rest of the country is going to say “aw geez, welp, I guess he’s a dictator now, nothin’ we can do about it”.

Yeah, that’s not going to happen. Unless you believe that trump will just suspend Congress, stop all voting, and somehow, all the police, all of the military, and 80+ million democrats would just stand aside and let it happen.

When he said he was going to be a dictator for one day, it was tongue in cheek, he would issue executive orders to close the border and expand drilling.

He’s not, nor has he ever said he’s “actually” going to try and be an ACTUAL dictator..

why don't they have a yawn emoji for threads like this one?

Will Trump try to make himself a dictator?

Yes. He’s already shown that he cares little for democracy.

How? He’ll install “Goerings” and “Himlers” all throughout the government.

Their names will be Kash Patel and Chris Miller and Roody the Ghould (after his pardon)
