Historical archetectual magnificence. And when you realize it was ravaged during two world wars it is difficult to understand how so much of its beauty has been saved/restored

I hesitate to say it, but if you are concerned about reporting of, for example, riots in Paris and such, essentially none of that happens in the areas that tourists visit. It is almost a certainty that you will not see any of that unpleasantness when you go there.

Interestingly, the only time I've seen anything comparable was when I went to Greece, and there were little signs posted all over the place saying - in Greek - tourists go home. It was laughable, especially in a country that needs every tourist Euro/Dollar that it can get.
