Pirates in the 21st century? This is not the era of 18th century. Yet these so called pirates take hostages and force ransom out of them.

Few days ago, a destroyer(called 'Munmu') of the South Korean navy valiantly foiled the Somali pirates' attempt to take the Danish merchant ship. This was the destroyer's first tour in the Gulf of Aden. The Korean navy sent an expeditionary force composed of a destroyer, an anti-submarine helicopter and 300 special force combatants.

With the United States at the center, more than 20 nations are forming a staunch bulwark that will stand against pirates. Yes, the pirates are on the offensive right now, but the tides will soon change. The coalition forces boast superior firepower compared to the enemy.

The day will come when the good finally purges the evil from the Gulf of Aden and achieve the ultimate victory.

Napalm where they live. The cities, villages and so on. Show them hell and then let them choose! Playing this tit for tat on the high seas will not stop them.

 , that is if the coalition forces are working within the best rules of engagement. Never heard about the dutch or other navies releasing pirates after they captured them?

...

Both NATO and the European Union have multinational flotillas operating under a mandate from the U.N. Security Council which tasks them with escorting World Food Program ships and with patrolling the seas around the Horn of Africa. The mandate says nothing about how to treat captured pirates.

...

Jurisdiction issues
The European Union recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the government of Kenya, which allows its ships to land any captives in Kenya where they can be prosecuted under that country's legal system.

But NATO does not have the same agreement with Nairobi and — since it is a separate entity — any agreements between Kenya and the EU don't automatically apply to the NATO task force.

The main reason for it is because these navies thought that they had no jurisdiction in that area (to arrest people: like for example when a US police officer wants to arrest someone on mexican soil). I sure hope these actions won't happen again, it makes those navies look really stupid in the eyes of the pirates.

The pirates will go away as soon as European corporations stop dumping their toxic waste off the coast of Africa.

No I am not 12 and clearly the napalm remark was sarcastic.

However, your bullshit of making excuses for them is exactly why they feel they can continue to get away with it. They are breaking a world law my friend and acting out against any and all nations. Making excuses for law breakers does nothing for them or their victims.

The pirates raced towards the MSC Melody in a small boat firing "like crazy" towards the 1,500 passengers and crew on board before trying to attach a ladder to the side of the ship.

But in a new twist to the increasing scourge of Somali pirate hijackings, private Israeli security forces aboard the MSC Cruises liner returned fire.

The dummies just attacked a french frigate today. That must have come as a hell of a shock in the brief time left to that set of pirates.

"Surrender we have an RPG and we'll Use it!" says the pirate scum.

"OH we'll see your RPG and raise you a three inch deck gun...

Well, sometimes the pirates win, at the moment, Germanys stance on piracy can be summed up as "Epic Fail". First we pay them, then we get fed up with paying, send 200 special forces to Kenia, rent a US helicoptor carrier (because the German Army didnt want to help the German Police Special forces or something, beurocratic paralysation for the win ehhm loose) only to cancel the entire affair (which costed more then the 15 million the pirates demanded, on the other side, a good amount of the money went to the US for renting the helicoptor carrier) a bit later.

The Berber pirates were stopped after the French permanently invaded their lands and killed around a quarter of their population, how many people live in Somalia?

Concerning the cruiser, what I hear was that noone recogniced the pirates at first, until they made contact and were climbing up the ship upon ladders. Some Passengers noticed that, one ran of to inform the captain, the rest began to throw various stools, plates and further objects at the pirates.
Yay for histories most ancient form of defense: beeing on an elevated position and throwing solid object at people below you.

But dumping toxic waste in Somalia is okay, right?

Likewise sending in fishing factories to mine the fish off the coast, also okay with you, right?

None of the above excuses piracy, but it certainly explains why they're not having much trouble recruiting, I'll wager.

I think everytime you shoot a pirate you should be given one of these caps!
