Big difference though: The reason Pakistan, India, and North Korea have nuclear weapons is purely territorial. Iran on the other hand, is led by an Ayatollah who believes in an an eschatological Islamic figure called the "Mahdi", who is expected to appear at the end of time to establish a global Islamic kingdom. Both Sunnis and Shias believe in the Mahdi, although they have different interpretations of his nature and role.

In Iran's dominant Twelver Shia tradition, the Mahdi is identified with the Twelfth Imam, Muhammad al-Mahdi, who is believed to be in a state of "occultation" (divine concealment) and will eventually return.
