So What Qualifies As A Service Dog?

For I know two autistic people and they never needed a service animal and one of them is severely autistic. This service animal thing is just looking for an excuse to take your pet with you on outings. I'm not saying that's what's happening here but in my experience autistic people don't need service animals.

The sad reality is that there is absolutely no standard for service dogs in terms of training and certification. Because of that, people with genuine service dogs, trained for public access, have contend with tons of pets labeled “service dogs”. My non-service dog is better trained.

They're just messing up the system for everybody that way. 🙄

Exactly. I have a friend who trains service dogs. She starts them as puppies, does tons of socialization, public access training, etc. before she seriously starts training them for tasks. Her dogs aren’t matched to clients until they are at least 2 yrs old, and even then many fail the program and become “career change” dogs placed in loving homes. When I see people talking about getting a puppy they are going to train to be a service dog I want to gag. Most have never even trained a pet dog. It is like having a service dog is a fad.

My Chihuahua could be a service dog......if only I could catch her. :auiqs.jpg:

Chihuahuas are Cujo if he were shrunk and Mexican. They're cute, but they scare me and one bit me once. I'll take a Pitbull over a Chihuahua any day of the week. That's just me though.

This is our service dog. She is just a coiled spring ready to leap up and help us.

Mine hasn't bit anyone but, she sure puts on good front. Not sure what happened to her, she's really skittish.

I'm not saying that they're all bad but they still freak me out though as a lot of them become demon possessed or something.

A service animal provides a service duh! Besides being your lunch or dinner a chicken serves no purpose. buttercup is going to throttle me for that, but I'm trying to make a point here.

Haha, come on now, if I got mad every time someone said something like that, I'd be mad all the time, which of course I'd never want to be the case. I'm used to people thinking in that way, because your way of thinking is how nearly all of us were conditioned to think, it's so "normal" that most people don't give it much thought, if any at all.

Btw, what you said could be a good topic for a thread of its own. But I'll have to do that on a different day, because I have some other stuff I have to do today. But I'll try to remember that topic for another time.

Thanks for not throttling me lol as my point actually was that there can't be a service chicken because what can you possibly teach a chicken to do? Besides maybe some cool pet tricks but they can't do the exact same jobs that dogs can do. So where is the line drawn?

No. I have no intention to discuss whether a small dog is a rat or a cat. I leave idiocy like that to you.

Good grief! Could you please go get ready for bed while the adults talk? 🙄

Wrong

Maybe - and none of them is a trained dog - that would shove around or commandeer your grandson.

Service dogs are not trained to attack. Most dogs are not. However, I guarantee that if you threatened either of my grandsons or his family, you would suffer the wrath of the aptly named Titan, who is the size of a small horse.

I spent several years being the target of special ops military working dogs. I know their abilities.

I bet you dont roll him around the mall in a baby stroller
No, but my wife had a doll carriage for our Shih Tzu. He's on my lap as I type this.

My other dog weighs about 75 pounds and could rip your arm off with one good bite. You know how tough seatbelts are? He destroyed three in a matter of minutes with those razor blades he has instead of teeth.

I don't like when people abuse the concept of a service animals, but sometimes we just have to let it go.

I never mentioned "trained to attack" - however an e.g. guide-dog is specifically trained to object aka. shove or commandeer a blind person so as to avoid a danger/accident. And an autistic person will in general not accept this - but will throw a tantrum and/or will run off.

Therefore in general, an autistic person is not compatible with a guide-dog.

Again it depends how autistic they are. As I told you before I know and am friends with somebody who is severely autistic that I've known since elementary school and she never has tantrums and runs off.

Oh come on, do you not find them adorable? 🥰 Although they're are pretty vocal I have to admit. 😆
