Those donations come with strings attached.

However, it is the system that is corrupt.
Most often newly elected House and Senate members go into the Beltway game wide eyed and full of ideas.
They then get invited to lunches with committee Chairs and their party's leadership.
They quickly learn that in order to get anything done, they have to kowtow to the wishes and whims of leadership and party.
It sucks.
The other problem is the voters. They vote the "jersey". Hence the reason out of 535 members of congress, there are TWO independents.
If more candidates not beholden to the two party system could get elected, perhaps then we would have a government that functions for US, as opposed to one that functions as though constituents were only to be tolerated as a nuisance.
Our Congress gets such low ratings because of "Hooray for our side".
For many years I have maintained that in government we need to be rid of politicians and send up Statesmen to represent us.

I am not saying conservatives are perfect or even could do a better job. But not one of our leaders has a conservative bone in his or her body.

We need conservatives AND liberals. We need both trains of thought to keep us moving forward but not at breakneck speed.

The conservative mind is much more of the "live and let live" philosophy; whereas, liberals believe that they know what is best for everyone else and everyone else will live by their rules come Hell or High Water! Liberals will sell their values to the highest bidder i.e. health insurance companies, union bosses etc. but a conservative while he may be wrong generally maintains his values come Hell or High Water.

Again there is not one American political leader who displays any conservative thought. They are ALL in it for personal wealth. They ALL will sell their values to the highest bidder. A conservative, right or wrong will stand by his beliefs, not so a liberal. There is no way you can spin it. That it liberalism at its finest. That is American politics at its worst. That is what will finally destroy this once great nation.
