Puerto Rico is a territory (Commonwealth) of the United States of America and Puerto Ricans have common citizenship, currency and defense. Although Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens, residents of Puerto Rico pay no federal income tax, nor can they vote in presidential elections.

That is how it was in Illinois when I was a kid and remember us referring to people from Indiana as Hoosiers and people from Missouri as Missourians...

I didn't know that. In the past a lot of Puerto Ricans have been very against it. That referendum definitely makes the optics worse for the right.

There was a ballot boycott on the issue so the "majority" didn't even support statehood. If you put the people who voted in the referendum but did not cast a response to the specific question in the no column, then the referendum still did not show clear majority support for statehood. It is not clear among those who boycotted that there is a uniform desire. Some may want to remain as is; others may want to disassociate from the US completely. My guess is that during fair weather, most would still not want to become a state, but their economic woes and hurricane damage would, at best, mean they are looking for money more than anything else. I personally don't care if they become a state or not, but there still is no objective measure that makes me think they truly want to be one anytime soon.
