I hate to say this because I know the intentions are good, but there is a bigger issue at stake here.
Central to the conservative mindset is small and limited government. The last thing anyone needs is another government intrusion into their lives, yet unfortunately, this is exactly the thing the Right has been buffaloed into supporting.
Yeah, I know, it sounds like a good idea, but the government has no right telling people what they can eat. I know some people eat too much junk shit, then, the government should just take junk food off the shelves for everyone.
Are you ready to give up cola, sweetened drinks, cake, ice cream, all deserts, and candy? You have to know that once started, more and more will only be added to the list.
This is an insidious form of discrimination. The truth is, there are many sick and disabled people who can barely get around, cannot cook, and depend on packaged and processed food to get by on.
Encourage people to eat better, help or offer people to get on nutrition programs, but please keep the government out of my kitchen. You see, by doing this, you have only moved government one step closer to telling YOU what you can buy and eat.
But, Toob--- these people can still buy this junk with their own money! Not everyone on food stamps is on welfare, and if these people had money, they would not need food stamps or welfare.
The real goal here is really just to cut down on benefits because what will really happen in that a lot of people will just end up buying less food and the state will pocket the savings.
It's not a bad point you make, but It could even go a long way if these food companies were required simply to use real sugar instead of HFCS, which is a terrible thing to pump into the bodies of little children who have no choice of what thier parents buy for them.
