Should most of the colleges in the US be closed?

I cannot think of a better example of an apples or oranges type of question. better yet, it should be apples and watermelons. 1970s education comes nowhere near the education kids receive today. That $90 billion is mostly student loans. Did you realize that?
The idea that the federal government should be involved in student loans is a whole other field of discussion.

If you have been paying attention to maga (especially young men) they have distain for higher education.
No, they absolutely do not. You said something very important that you ignored in your own screed. You said, "If you have been paying attention", and it's obvious that you have not. There is no disdain for higher education, there is acknowledgement that being saddled with more than $100,000 in debt to get a degree that does you little to no good in the job market is a foolish quest indeed. There is also acknowledgement that a young person who is not well suited for sitting in a classroom absorbing a professor's regurgitated knowledge can be better suited with a technical career path or getting trained in a valuable skill. Foolishly thinking that 4-6 years attending a university is universally better for all students is, well, foolish.

Do you honestly think states want to go back to their racist, prejudiced educational systems that kept the poor, handicapped, and minorities in a lower class forever? That's how it was in 1980 when the Education Department came into being. I know it was because I graduated high school in 1978.
Good point. Since we agree that states don't want to be racist or keep the poor, handicapped and minorities in a lower class forever, why do we need a federal bureaucracy to prevent them from doing it?

Why?

People who obtain college degrees on average over a lifetime of paying taxes pay 2.5 to 3 times more than people do it don’t.

It allows people who have the talent but not the means to obtain a degree.

We're not going back to Jim Crow, no matter how much fear mongering there is.
Of course not, but Oklahomans just tried injecting Christian religion back in schools and that violates the Constitution and numerous prior SCOTUS rulings. Who will take them to court to see their attempt is blocked? Would you want Michigan to implement Islam in the predominantly Muslim schools in Dearborn?

All religions should be abolished in schools, government and any aspect of government.
