Well they basically are privileges now whether you like it or not. Just like the above examples of whether or not you're a felon or mentally ill. Other than that it's your right. The amendment is just called the right to beat arms.

Also, I don't mean to go off subject here but remember the whole entire birth right in this country being a controversy because it was being taken advantage of? I think that the second amendment gets abused a lot too sometimes because they can give just anybody a gun and that's how so many shootings happen. Control who gets the gun don't take away the guns and the crime rate will hopefully start to go down. You take away all of the guns altogether and then the crime rate is going to escalate because only the bad guys will have them.

federal background checks are very thorough .. you have to pass one to buy a gun from a retailer or gun shop .. there's no way to prevent straw purchases .,

It's not a privilege to own a firearm anymore than it is a privilege to drive a tractor trailer in traffic. Some freedoms guaranteed in the Bill of Rights are absolute but other freedoms come with restrictions that have evolved in the legal system during the last 250 years. Nobody wants a maniac to be able to purchase a firearm but nobody want's to restrict the 2nd Amendment right of a citizen to own a firearm. It's a balance and we trust the legislative and judicial branches of government to respect it.

You are basically right, CK, not everyone is stable enough to own a gun. Problem is that unstable people should know that of themselves and opt out of owning one of their own accord:

THE FATAL FLAW in your argument is that if it is made a privilege instead of a right, who does that put in charge of your owning a gun but the government--- the very people with the most to lose and the greatest interest in your not having a gun, which is why it was made a right and not a privilege in the first place!

That is like putting the Fox in charge of the chicken coup.

Just look at the first thing the government does when put in charge of anything (like healthcare):

• Do they put patient health ahead first?
• Nope, they just cut the benefits to save money for themselves.

No but if you commit a felony they can and do. Mentally ill people aren't as well as controlled. Then again I do realize that criminals are always going to get guns whether we like it or not that's why taking away guns isn't the answer either.
