I know it isn't a popular view. I'd rather see employers be required to pay a living wage than see them be required to enforce immigration policy.

how would they be required to enforce immigration policy? That is the single most stupidest answer you could have come up with.
They already are required to an extent. They must screen their employees and make sure all their papers are in order or they get fined or imprisoned.

In many jobs the "screening" consists of handing the prospective employee a paper that s/he signs saying that s/he has the right to work in the US, a cursory glance at docs, a wink and a nod, and after a year or two the fed sends the employer a paper saying there is a document/SS number discrepancy, the employee then goes to the supplier and for about $50 buys a new set of docs and they cycvle starts over.

The fraudulently documented worker applies for a tax ID number, then they get to file income tax forms and so on, separate and apart from the fraudulent documents they use for the job, and can then get mortgages, and so on! I am not quite sure, I will have to check, but I think they get earned income refunds if they have citizen children, all while illegal.

This checking papers deal is not as cut and dry as we might think. It should be, but, it isn't.

Further, sadly many small business owners actually do try to hire responsibly and flub up. Then others, of course large and small, play the game trying to take advantage of the situation.

As I can't disagree with business owners being more responsible, we also need better regulation from the government in this area and we need one simple easy to confirm way to weed them out. I have seen some really good forged papers out there.

We are a very small family owned company and we don't employ many, not anymore, however, we hire anyone who is qualified according to our requirements and over the past five years I had two illegal's sneak by with some really good papers. I caught on to it through conversation down the road. I fired them and reported them, nothing happened and they are most likely working down the road someplace.

Not long ago my MIL was hit and her truck totaled by a illegal. No license, no insurance and no papers. He paid his fines and left! ....... Amazing!

The problem is in Washington, not with the people trying to get in. Hell you can't blame them, wouldn't we also want to get in also? ..........

IMO, The states need to be able to handle these issues and deport directly from the state level, with no federal involvement.

Mike Mike Mike,, can you say ACLU?

I came on a Trade NAFTA visa and then went to an H1B1.

Did you have to go through a lawyer for the H1B? Mine took months to sort out (loads of paperwork about my career to date to prove I was qualified). I appreciate that there are rules about getting Americans into these kind of jobs, but it held up the company I was going to work with for 6 months and cost them about $40k in legal fees. This was 15 years ago. Maybe it's changed.

I got my first H over 10 years ago. There was some paperwork, but maybe I don't think its a lot because my Green Card was a mountain of paper!

You're lucky your company paid. I shelled out ~$30k for legal fees over the years.

I paid for my green card. Less money (about $6k) but MUCH more paperwork.

And if they get a t.i.n, or a fake social, they are paying into the system.

You're probably one of those idiots that want everyone to have a national id so you can punish everyone, not just the illegals. Well, IMO, you're an unAmerican twit...but that must just be because I think only an unAmerican twit would neg rep someone for their opinion.

So, **** off, *****.

There are hundreds of thousands of aliens on visas and green-cards employed ahead of US citizens. I want to see a clearing house where a qualified citizen can "bump" an alien for a job in his area and field. Similar to union seniority rules. This link is old, but shows about how many non-citizens were working here while unemployment goes to 11%

Field? You got that right. There are so many Republicans lining up to pick strawberries for 5 bucks an hour. Of course, they don't care about health care. We already know that. The only problem is they are so fat they eat more than they pick. Pass the cream? Whip it good, whip it "real" good.

Stop promoting a situation about which you obviously know nothing! YOU obviously have no clue what is done to fraudulently documented workers.

Educate yourself on the issue!

Now you're crying about abusing undocumented workers...you're a ******* moron and a hypocrite.

First- your title of the article says 2005? NOT 2009, when unemployment hit 10+%.

Second-the employer should be able to hire and pay, the best person for the job opening that is here legally.

IF the candidates for the job were equal on all levels, I lean towards them hiring the citizen but to force a private owner to do such would be an over reach of government, since both are legally here and up for hire.

We should do more to encourage anyone who has gone through the trouble of getting to this country to work to become a citizen and keep money in the country. Immigration is the strength of the U.S.A. To make light of it, look at our Olympic teams. If we need a skinny black man to win a 100 meter race for us, we got one. If we need a tiny Chinese girl to compete on some tumbling bars, we got one. That's what makes America great.

Oh, and I'm fair with having employers responsible for hiring folks who are at least in the country legally. Someday computers will make this easier.

Legal immigrants welcome to the USA. Hope you are very successful and encourage your family and friends to legally join you.

Illegal immigrants need to be air dropped in Somalia.

Some applying for the PR status, when married to a US citizen, get to answer very personal questions and have their sheets checked!

Have their sheets checked for what?

Whether they are "really" married.....

Marrying For Love? You'll Have To Prove It- City Limits: News for NYC's Nonprofit, Policy and Activist World

Can you be specific please? Are you saying that the INS / DHS / ICE or whoever has the right to go into the home of a person who is applying for residency and inspect the cleanliness or otherwise of their bedsheets to determine whether they are having sex with the person they say they are married to? If so, 3 issues with that:

1. Are prospective immigrants supposed not to change their linen just in case the immigration guy drops round for a cup of coffee and a quick look at the sheets? If they don't, the assumption will be "Clean sheets? Who the hell do you think you're kidding?"
2. Unless samples of 'soiled sheets' are taken to a lab and checked against the DNA of the applicant and his / her spouse, simply popping round and staring at some sheets isn't going to prove anything about who is screwing whom.
3. The article you posted in support of your post above mentions a lot of things about fraud, paperwork, photos, background checks and interviews, but not once does it mention bedsheets.

So, can you tell me (and provide a link to) where you got the information that the government is checking bedsheets? Or is this another example of your "I live in California, I speak Spanish and I know what I'm talking about" kind of evidence?

Oh good. I was wondering when you'd arrive to give us the benefit of your invaluable opinion.

"Heh! Heh-heh! Hey Beavis, Did you hear that? Field. Heh-heh! Wonder what they're growing in that 'field'. Heh-heh. Heh."
