Service employees outraged customers are refusing to raise their tips

I was at hotel coffee stand - sort of like Starbucks - and wanted a quick, inexpensive breakfast.

Their pre-assembled egg and cheese muffin was $9. The coffee was $6. Then they added a “facility fee” and of course sales tax for a total of almost $18. THEN they expect a tip on top of that. So it would be $20 for a counter-service, pre-made egg muffin & coffee.

(I went across the street to McDonalds and had the same thing for $6.)

The prices have become ridiculous, and then they want tips on the HIGHER food prices? They’re doing the same work.

I ate at Bob Evans the other day. Half salad/half sandwich. $8.99. I ordered water. I left her $3.00. Over 30%. she was really hot. LOL (and because of the heavy snow the only waitress working and still did a great job).
That would be exceptional circumstances.

I personally never order appetizers or alcoholic beverages in a restaurant, which immediately brands me as a cheapskate in the eyes of many servers. **** 'em.

Huh? Husband always wants to order appetizers and then we end up not eating much of our meal, sure you can take it home but who wants to pay $30+ for leftovers. I rarely order alcohol and honestly stick to water because soda/tea are way overpriced.

I always tip. I might be in the minority but I do tip at places like fast food if it's a listed option. I look at it this way giving a few $ as a tip isn't going to change my financial status.

I also tip movers and service technicians, like plumbers, electricians, HVAC...if they do a good job.

Everybody remember when everybody civilized used to tip all service people?

I still tip my mail carrier. Usually tip my UPS guy (I'm lucky enough to have a regular one). I do tip trades people, because they don't have unions here. They really appreciate an extra $20.

The thing is now on take out if you use a credit card, they prompt you on the tip.
Tips start at 20 percent and go to 30 percent

If you want to give less, you have to enter a different value

I used to throw spare change in the tip jar.
Now, I just skip it
What is "spare change"? Who carries cash anymore?

That was your first mistake.

Well, you are weird. We knew that.

I actually had some cash a few months back that my wife gave to me to make a purchase at a convenience store while traveling. The clerk looked at me like I had horns on my head!
Having cash is great in a restaurant

Ever go out with a group of friends where you are splitting the bill?
Much easier to just throw in cash to cover your portion

I consider myself a pretty good tipper but I'm curious as to the "why"?

Why should I be tipping even more? It's starting to get insulting to the customer.

A server who does a decent job will get a 20% tip from me. If he/she goes above and beyond a decent job and does an exceptional job he/she will get a 25% to 30% tip from me. I factor that into whether I can afford to go out to eat at all.

A server who is sloppy, inattentive, incompetent will get a 10% tip from me. If he/she is bad enough, no tip and I probably won't be going back to that restaurant.

It is said that restaurant employees are likely to demand ALL their income be tips if Trump's proposed 'no tax on tips' goes into effect. That would be really risky for those people though as customers will still have the power to tip as much or as little as they want unless the restaurant makes the amount of the tip mandatory on the bill. And the customers could resent that a lot.

Policy/rules need to take into consideration how they will affect people's behavior and that means taking into consideration the culture that exists.

Those restaurants who make tips mandatory and figure them automatically into the bill only see the dust on my heels. That's pretty damned arrogant and they deserve to go out of business.

The exception is when you go to a four star restaurant where the service is guaranteed to be exceptional.

What I hate is when I don’t notice they already added a tip on your bill and you add a tip on your own

They don’t chase you down to return your extra tip
