U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley joined an Iowa Farmers Union virtual town hall on Monday to discuss federal actions that have impacted farmers in Iowa, including freezes on grant programs and imposed foreign tariffs.

Aaron Lehman, IFU president who moderated the call, said farmers are feeling the effects of the top-down changes on their bottom lines and their ability to innovate as planting season approaches.

Grassley, who also serves on the Senate Committee on Agriculture, said Congress needs to pass a farm bill this year to give farmers certainty.

"Certainty for farmers, looking ahead five years is very important,” Grassley said. “And I hope that the new Congress can deliver a five-year farm bill.”

Iowa farmers are always bitching about something....Their constant carping gets old quick.

One thing Biden did correctly was cut them off at the knees as far as the first dem "primary"....Hell, they can't even get that right.

Grassley (91) needs to retire and move-on too.

Shit Storm, this is a local paper. Grassley was there; they covered it. Calling it fake news does change the Grassley was there and talking farmers. The publication is very conservative, you do know that right?

Look, I understand people really don't conceive even a part of the food supply chain, but come on. These farmers have signed contracts in hand and they are wondering if they are going to be honored. That is precisely how Trump does business. It is completely unacceptable.

I mean come on, a farmer has hundreds of acres, maybe even thousands. He has millions of dollars worth of equipment. And he is about to drop six figures on seed and fertilizer as we enter the spring. Doesn't he deserve some certainty? The farmers have been through the mill for the last, hell, almost one hundred years. Terrible how they have been treated. Sadly, my family has been out for several years. It is a hard life, but it is a good life, a rewarding life.

The OP article addressed already promised farm aid. I am thinking crop insurance, maybe some seed subsidies or maybe some promised price floor, government buys it all at x price. That is where that free cheese comes from. Doesn't matter, these farmers have decisions to make, millions of dollars on the line, millions of more dollars worth of assets. The ones suffering the most, those with USAID contracts. Yeah.

People are so damn stupid. Oh, that USAID money goes to Zimbabwe or something. No it doesn't. That food aid, well one check got stroked, the one to Farmer John, that grew the grain, or the potatoes, or the rice. USAID provides aid. Damn, who would have thunk it. And the vast majority of that aid is produced by domestic producers that GET PAID. Now, well that might be gone. How do they proceed?

It is scary, really. The ignorance of the Trump administration and their "advisors". I mean they are swinging their, we will edit that part, in areas that they have even a minimal understanding. I mean I will leave with this. Norway, a key provider of fuel for the US Navy as we operate in the North Atlantic. It is "No soup, oh, I mean fuel, for you".

Nobody is really bitching about food aid.

They and I ***** about things like our money for the transgender clinics in India that I posted of this morning.

A pause is good to sort through it all.

Maybe growing season is approaching but Iowa farmers need to be patient and wait for the effects of the tariffs to click in. Farmers don't want a handout from Grassley. What they want is an equal playing field where our neighbors to the north don't take advantage of Uncle Sam and European countries are willing to import American farm products. USA first.
