True, only if you have a CRT or a plasma screen will screen savers be of any benefit.Screen savers are unnecessary. They were developed back in the 1980's in order to prevent "burn-in" of images that were continuously displayed on displays and other CRT(cathode ray tube) style TV and video game "picture tubes". The CRTs contained phosphorous which was burned in via the ~20,000 volt powering of the internal magnetic screens inside the tubes.
The CRT has now been made obsolete and has since been replaced with flat-screen LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) or LED (Light Emitting Diode) video displays. It requires only a 12vdc input, and there is no phosphor inside them, thus it is next to impossible for the previously mentioned burn-in to occur.
That having been said, the "screen saver" has also been made obsolete and is no longer needed. Unless you are still running an old CRT monitor, you can uninstall any screensavers you may have in your system.
Well, I suppose they do save you you from having to look at boring screen. No they don't. They save screens thus their name. No one has made any other claim.
