Only a few days ago, an article appeared on this site about the fact that the operators of old people's homes throughout Germany are going on the barricades against the Infection Protection Act. In particular, the requirement to wear masks in the common rooms of these facilities met with clear criticism. Similarly as in old people's homes applies among other things also in hospitals soon a FFP2-Maskenpflicht, but evenly only starting from 1 October. Nevertheless our editorship reached, probably as reaction to the at the beginning mentioned article, the letter of a reader, in which this notes: The university hospital in Cologne has now its own 'Sharia police'." Attached were some pictures showing Lauterbach's deputies at work. Is it just a coincidence that the federal health minister comes from Düren, not far away, and has his political home in the electoral district of Cologne IV - Leverkusen?
The reader describes the inspectors, who act in anticipatory obedience, as "disgusting fellows who stick their heads into every office and every sickroom." Employees, patients and visitors are apparently to be made aware of the supposed need for FFP2 masks in a very indiscreet manner. Until October, there is still no legal basis for fines, but the self-appointed law enforcers are distributing FFP2 masks to all those who let themselves be seen "topless" in the university hospital. Our reader feels reminded of times long thought to have been overcome, but which are once again finding their way into everyday life in more and more areas in this country. "Stasi with an educational mission," is his sober conclusion.
Comparisons of this kind do not come out of the blue. The Corona policy of recent years has given too many people too much power over their neighbors. The most recent example of this was the ejection of star pianist Justus Frantz from an ICE train as he was on his way to a benefit concert for "Children in Need." An overzealous conductor with long-suppressed fantasies of omnipotence saw the opportunity to grab his 15 minutes of fame at the expense of the prominent passenger - and unfortunately also at the expense of needy children. The fact that Frantz had only taken off his mask during the meal no longer mattered. Unfortunately, similar incidents had to be reported on this site more than once in the past months and years.
Harmful effects of FFP2 masks are still ignored
There are good reasons to avoid FFP2 masks not only during meals, but in general. At the risk of repeating ourselves, the dangers posed by this utensil, which originated in the world of occupational safety, cannot be pointed out often enough. Wearing for more than 75 minutes is expressly discouraged by the manufacturers. For persons who want to or have to wear an FFP2 mask regularly, an occupational health examination is recommended to check individual safety. The Robert Koch Institute points to an increased risk of side effects such as facial dermatitis and respiratory distress. And so on and so forth.
Is the board of directors of the University Hospital of Cologne around Prof. Dr. Edgar Schömig unaware of these facts, which are now familiar even to many laymen? Or are they simply ignored, so that one can go ahead with allegedly good example and collect a few plus points with the Federal Minister of Health? Despite all the justified and necessary criticism of images such as those from the University Hospital in Cologne, the on-board bistro of an ICE train or the Oktoberfest in Munich, one thing must not be forgotten: Such behaviors only work as long as the majority of citizens put up with them. And so it is hardly surprising that both the protests last winter and the current demonstrations are particularly popular in the new German states - a large proportion of the people living there have already experienced such times of an arbitrary and encroaching state and do not want to have to go through them again.
