I've spent the last two winters in Vietnam and Cambodia, both nominally communist countries. The freedom of religion is amazing with Churches, Mosques and Bhuddest temples with open worship.

The modern countries do not tout the Marxist line against religion. Most likely, unlike the Soviets and their satellites, religion is not seen as a threat to the communist parties.

Vietnam in particular has progressed very nicely. Vietnam never had Mao's Cultural Revolution although Cambodia did with Pol Pot. .
