They felt he would die if he entered the house. Pretty simple concept.

Isn't that his decision to make? I didn't realize it was now the responsibility of the police to abuse a man trying to save his son from a fire. Any parent worth a grain of salt would have done the same.

It is the fire department and police departments job to protect the public so yes they have a duty to prevent him from entering the building if they feel it will endanger his life. Further if he enters and is a casualty it endangers the fire departments peoples lives when they have to try and rescue him.
