You have to be able to look at things from a broader perspective to understand Russia. Something folks on the left seem to have lost the ability to do.

Russia is trying to regain their status as a world power in the world. Status is important in /all/ high up issues (business, politics, sports, etc.) They are hoping that if the US pulls out of the ME then they can play a bigger part in global police work and thus increase their status on the world stage. It's not that they are looking for war, it's that they want to be seen as a strong nation because that facilitates a hundred thousand different things from trade to relationships.

I've seen that entire Putin interview/meeting and a couple others as well. And Obama allying with Turkey and moving into Syria intentionally trying to force Russia to attack. (Last I heard Kerry reported that Congress would not give him permission to move in - which would likely bring everything to a head.)

I guess I'm biased or something, after the Cold War we started doing friendly training missions with countries all over the world. Alaskan's welcomed our new allies from Russia, and a lot of them ended up spending time in my city (which is where most of the generals and higher ups live) a number of them ultimately ended up moving here so we've had years of friendly interactions with them. I am frankly baffled why the UN wants to push war with Russia. Folks acting like they are the USSR and then increasing militarily hostile actions toward them. I don't agree with their assessments, I have no issues with Russia wanting a big part on the world stage - I see it as a natural position for them in a world of peaceful co-existence. I lived through the Cold War, on the front lines primary target for Russian nukes. Every single one of us knew that if a war started with Russia we would be one of the first places nuked. (I mean it's not even a question in my mind, JBER will be one of the first targets and my house is practically /on/ the artillery range.) I have been seriously concerned with the direction that Obama and the UN have been taking toward Russia for at least a few years now. Frankly, I'm just happen that Putin seems to fear a nuclear war as well and thus has been very patient with the unreasonable [imo] and aggressive actions that the UN and US have been taking toward them.

I should also mention that my father was a general so they've actually hosted dinner parties with Russian troops and such at their house when I was younger.
