All meaningless until Ukraine ceding rights to Crimea and Donbas are on the table.
Moscow is demanding that Kiev officially recognize Crimea as part of Russia and the republics in Donbass as independent states. Crimea voted to leave Ukraine and rejoin Russia shortly after the 2014 Maidan coup in Kiev. During the recent talks in Istanbul the Ukrainian delegation promised that Kiev won’t be making attempts to return the Donbass republics by force, and suggested holding separate negotiations on the status of Crimea over the course of 15 years.
This seems to indicate that the two sides are getting close. Russia's priorities are practically satisfied by this statement.
Returning the Crimea to the Ukraine is impossible for Russia to agree upon, due to their Navy base there. This attempt by the US to wrestle it away from Russia was always a bridge too far, that resulted in a worse situation than the peaceful status quo that existed.
The Donbass region isn't so certain and can be satisfied by an agreement of neutrality.
Russia will take the entire Ukraine before it will give up the Crimea. If America desires to keep this war going to deplete Russia's strength at the cost of Ukrainian lives, then the Crimea is the gambit that can guarantee that.
This is a war between America and Russia and that makes the stakes much higher than is being appreciated.
The Russian people are totally behind Putin, as we are now being informed.
Are Americans with Biden on winning this war?
The outcome will decide two major issues.
Either the end of US/Nato encroachment toward Russia's borders
or
The partioning and disintegration of the Russian state.
Unless the Ukraine decides to govern it's own future without outside interference. There never was a good reason for the Ukraine's ethnic civil war against the parts of their country in question.
Maybe something very big will happen to break the logjam. Let's all hope it's not nuclear!
