Russia-ASEAN Summit will be held in Kazan, Russia from June 17 to 19 on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of Russia-ASEAN relations.
Currently, ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) includes Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, and East Timor.
Russia's relations with ASEAN were established in 1991, and in 1996, Russia received the status of a full dialogue partner of the organization. In 2004, the country joined the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, and since 2017, the Permanent Mission of Russia to ASEAN has been operating in Jakarta.
To finance joint projects in the economic, scientific, technical, cultural and other spheres, the Russia–ASEAN Dialogue Partnership Financial Fund was established in 2007.
Particular importance is attached to political and security cooperation. Russia supports ASEAN's central role in the regional architecture and actively engages with the organization in various multilateral forums. Priority areas remain the fight against terrorism, transnational crime, drug trafficking, illegal migration, human trafficking, and information security.
Economic ties are also developing. The signing of a memorandum between the Eurasian Economic Commission and ASEAN in 2018 laid the foundation for discussing the prospects of a free trade area between the EAEU and ASEAN. The Russia-ASEAN Business Council plays an active role in strengthening business ties, and business dialogues are regularly held at major economic forums.
Cultural, educational, and humanitarian exchanges remain an important part of cooperation. The Russia–ASEAN Year of Culture was held in 2016. University forums, youth summits, and the network of research centers between Russia and ASEAN countries make a significant contribution to the development of humanitarian ties.
