Payton is overrated as a coach. He has a personal grudge against Wilson for whatever reason and wanted to replace him even before he took the job.

Wilson isn’t a “washed up old guy.” They’ve already committed to him for signing him to a 5 year extension to his existing contract.

Payton has completely screwed the pooch in the way he’s handled this situation.

For sure. It made no sense for them to sign that extension with 2 years left on the existing one. But that was the mistake of the former owners. Not surprising that the current owners aren't married to it.

Seattle didn’t release Wilson. They knew that’s he was going to need huge contract which would make it impossible for them to make the upgrades they needed, so they negotiated a blockbuster trade with a team dumb enough to pay that kind of money.

Wilson’s actions and attitude burnt his bridges in Seattle. It had nothing to do with supposed deteriorating skills.

Geno Smith played well last season, but he’s not as physically skilled as Wilson. Smith’s performance this year has been up and down. When he’s good, he’s very good. When he’s bad, he’s very bad. Generally he’s both good and bad in the same game.


Wilson’s former Super Bowl era teammates aren’t “trashing” him, but they aren’t supporting him zealously. Sherman, Lynch and Doug Baldwin have a lot of good things to say about him. Mostly they think Carroll coddled him too much.
