RIP George Foreman

No doubt about that. I remember seeing a photo that was taken of Joe Frazier getting hit with one of Foremans uppercuts, and it lifted him vertically about 6 inches off the canvas before he went down. Frazier once said, "George had fists like wrecking balls."'

Shavers did have s higher K.O. percentage at 91% versus 89% for Foreman, but what really set George apart as a puncher was that he could also take a good punch, and in 81 pro fights, he never failed to go the distance, except for being stopped once by Ali.

I remember watching that live, it was really startling.

I still have his grill. RIP

Shavers needed two or three hits to do what foreman did in one. But yes shavers is considered to be the all time heavyweight ko champ. Having said that many of the professional top contenders who fought both men said that "nobody hit like George Foreman...it was like being hit by something that wasn't even human."

He recanted that statement years later. One of his corner men, Archie Moore, was actually my amateur coach back in the 70's, and stated that George was told to go out and knock Ali out early.

Leading up to that fight, George had a lengthy list of early knockouts, and at that point in his career he had not learned how to pace himself.

By the 8th round, when it ended, he was exhausted and could barely keep his hands up.
I guess Foreman had bad strategy against Ali. Foreman ko's Frazier twice early on, Frazier gives Ali all Ali could handle and then some but Foreman gets ko'd by Ali. Always wondered why.

Ali was a very smart fighter. Although his particular strategy, the rope-a-dope.... Probably cost him his Parkinson's condition later on in life.

George came to my High School and gave a convocation in the auditorium. Afterwards, he showed up in my anthropology class and spoke to us on a smaller scale. On the way out, at the end of class, I got to shake his hand. Big paws on that dude!

RIP George.
