A corrupt crew of city correction officers, inmates and even a jail cook were busted Thursday for allegedly running an underground criminal network sneaking weapons and drugs into Rikers Island.
Seventeen people were indicted for helping smuggle scalpels, narcotics and synthetic marijuana past security and into the hands of prisoners, prosecutors said.
The ringleader, Officer Kevin McCoy, 31, allegedly received more than $10,000 to sneak in drugs and at least 17 blades wrapped in duct tape into Rikers from Sept. 12 to Nov. 24, 2015 — when he was busted with seven shanks hidden in his pants.
