I also grew up without most of the luxuries my friends and classmates enjoyed. It didn't hurt me. It sure made me appreciate what I had. I married a man who grew up poorer and less advantaged than I was. I at least had some cultural advantages he didn't, but he made up that deficit quickly. We were so poor when we first married but then so were most of our closest friends and we were blessed with many. It was fun days then, sharing meals, providing our own entertainment, etc. Raising our babies together.

Agreed. I worked most of my adult life, even with small children. I did have excellent loving, private childcare for them though and lived pretty much exclusively in small towns where I was five minutes or less away from them should I be needed. Neither of them, now successful adult professionals, feel resentment or that they were deprived of anything as kids growing up.
I think you hit on something there with the small town thing. The poor in the big cities don't really have a chance. I mentioned in another thread somewhere that, instead of giving the able bodied poor Medicaid because they can't afford life in the big city, we should spend the money to bus them to areas of the country where they can actually afford to live.
