Alabama state Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin (R) is pushing legislation that would impose restrictions on abortion clinics -- a move that she argues is necessary because the procedure is a major surgery that removes the largest "organ" in a woman's body.

“When a physician removes a child from a woman, that is the largest organ in a body,” McClurkin told the Montgomery Advertiser on Thursday. “That’s a big thing. That’s a big surgery. You don’t have any other organs in your body that are bigger than that.”

So by depicting an abortion as a major surgery, they can require that abortion doctors have hospital priviledges. Most abortion doctors do not have hospital priviledges and a huge number of hospitals won't give them priviledges.

I just don't like end runs.

Confront the issue head on. If you don't have the votes, then go out and work for them and win them. (and btw - heckling women on their way into a clinic is not winning them)

The bill is aimed at requiring abortion doctors to have hospital priviledges on the premise that this is a major surgery. And since most hospitals will not grant priviledges to abortion doctors... presto ... you have essentially outlawed abortion.

It's an end run around Roe v Wade. And while I think Roe v Wade is bad law and a poster-child example of judicial activism, I don't support end runs like this.

I would prefer that you win the votes you need to attack the issue head-on. Saying scientifically stupid things and heckling women as they walk into a clinic is sheer stupidity. You aren't winning anyone. You are alienating them.
