Republican Economic Policy

Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump appealed to white blue collar workers by appealing to nostalgia for the 1950's. The 1950's can be seen as the golden age of the white working class. The Second World War destroyed the factories of our trade revivals while leaving our factories intact. This gave American manufactures a buyers' market for natural resources and a sellers' market for what they manufactured. The Immigration Reform Act of 1924 restricted the number of immigrants who could compete for jobs. The low birth rate during the Great Depression also restricted job applicants until well into the 1960's. Blacks and women were discriminated against in hiring. The reforms of the New Deal of the 1930's guaranteed that much of the economic growth would go to white blue collar workers. The top tax rate rate was much higher, so the tax burden for blue collar workers was lower. One third of the work force was in labor unions. The average house cost twice the average salary. It was possible for a white man with only a high school degree to get a job that enabled him to move to the suburbs, and marry a woman who did not need to work, and who could stay home raising the children.

Neither Reagan nor Trump restored the plush economic times for white blue collar workers. Neither wanted to restore the steeply progressive taxation of the 1950's, and the strong labor unions. Nevertheless, they knew how to appeal emotionally to what really was a good time for white blue collar workers. When Trump's slogan "Make America Great Again" appealed to white blue collar workers the "again" they were thinking of was the 1950's.

I know a good many.

Each party gets in, goes too far and pisses off half the country. Then it gets beat because of it. Then it wonders why.

Neither party learns, because they don't have to. They are incentivized and rewarded to just play to their base.

We need to change the system before it's too damn late.

The solution has always been there---triple the size of the House of Representatives.

In 1950 the top tax rate in the United States was 84.36%. Until 1959 it was usually 91.0%

I have not found the tax rate for working and middle class Americans. Nevertheless, because the rich were paying more, they were paying less.

Nevertheless, because the rich were paying more, they were paying less.

Higher rate. Doesn't mean they were "paying more".

the tax burden for blue collar workers was lower.

Wrong. Thanks for playing.

As a result of Republican tax cuts for the rich, the national debt as a percentage of GDP was 124% in 2021.

This is total horseshit. The rise in the national debt is the result of overspending by both parties, NOT any tax cuts. I forget the name of the guy who proved this axiom to be true, but essentially here is no actual correlation between tax rates and revenue. Revenue went up, not down the year after Trump's tax cuts. Which BTW were NOT for the rich, that is a big lie perpetuated by the Left. Most of the people who benefited from those tax cuts were the middle and lower income people.

Saying that tax cuts do not raise the national debt but that spending cuts do is as preposterous as saying that eating too much does not cause obesity, but exercising to little does. The increase in the national debt has been caused by Republican tax cuts for the rich, and spending more for a military that is the best funded military in the world, but which could not defeat the Taliban in 20 years.

Tax cuts bolster the economy by giving more money back to The People (especially 'rich' corporations) who hire people and provide goods and services for a PROFIT. Spending cuts truncate useless government spending and thereby allow The People to keep more of what they earned by providing a smaller tax liability.

Representation Is a Re-Presentation of All Previous Elitist Tyrannies

Let the people vote on the most important issues. The majority in 1964 never would have voted for civil rights for the uncivilized Aframs, everybody knows that. Nor for Teddy Kennedy's "Come One, Come All" Immigration Bill. But those two policies created a majority that is against the previously successful American Way, so we have to have a civil war before we can have government by referendums.

Not so. First of all, you were talking about the 124% rise in the national debt in 2021, which had little to do with the Trump tax cuts. Instead, it was the trillions of extra spending the democrats did in that year, some for the military but mostly for COVID relief. Whether it was really needed is another story, and beside the point which is that this country does not have a revenue problem, caused by tax cuts or otherwise. We have a spending problem, and THAT is causing the national debt to rise so precipitously.

Well cry to Apple and Nike, companies run by...........you guessed it.......DEMOCRATS........it's like you just step on rakes.
Your statement does not disprove mine. It does not matter if a CEO votes Democrat or Republican. What matters is what the CEO does to his employees.

In 1945 the national debt as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) was 114%. During President Carter's last full year in office, 1980, this had declined to 32%. It declined during the wars in Korea and Vietnam.

U.S. National Debt by Year

During this time the top tax rate was never below 70%, and was often much higher.

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-soi/02inpetr.pdf

During President Reagan's eight years in office the top tax rate declined to 28%. The national debt as a percentage of GDP rose to 50%. It declined slightly during the administration of Bill Clinton, because he raised the top tax rate from 31.0% to 39.6%.

George W. Bush cut taxes for the rich again, while starting two wars he could not win, even though he had the most expensive military in the world.

During Trump's four years in office the national debt as a percentage of GDP increased from 104% to 129. Meanwhile, he could not defeat the Taliban.

That is what we get from Republican economic policy: a growing national debt, and a bloated military that cannot win wars.
