How is if fair for you not to contribute to the government that provides the common defense?

Because it is constitutionally provided for, and a proper use of government. As are courts and law enforcement, weights and measures, consumer protection, treaties with foreign nations, and settling disputes between the states.

How is it fair to me, a taxpayer, that the money I earn is stolen by the government and given to others in the name of the common defense, when I don't want any of my money used for that purpose?

That said, I believe that helping people - temporarily - is fine. It is what we are called to do, whether is be through our churches or state funded programs.

During the early days of the Republic, Congress thought it was obligated to provide financial support for poverty stricken individuals.

Just keep in mind, bleeding heart liberals, when the people who make the money have their pockets turned out like the poor Monopoly man, where are you going to get your money from to fund all of these programs???

Because it is one of the few services shared equally by all members of society: the need to defend it from foreign and domestic threats to that system. That is why it's fair. Your equivalency fails.

2. Gov't is only responsible for creating an environment where people can prosper.

It's a vague statement, and I think that was done on purpose. "Promote the general welfare" to me means creating an environment wherin the people can be safe, and prosper. NOT one where the Gov't calls all the shots.

For example:

I have accumulated enormous wealth, whereas you are a little person and have probably accumulated very little wealth. Thus, I benefit much more than you, because I have much more that needs defending.
