Republican Admits to Sabotaging Jimmy Carter's Election

They hated Carter because he gave sanctuary to the Shah of Iran

Sounds like they didn't need a deal with Reagan to want to keep the hostages.
Think about it. If it was all about punishing Carter, that was done in November. They could have released the hostages the day after election day.

Instead, they waited until the moment that Ronald Reagan had the power to return the favor.

We made a huge mistake in Iran, overturning a democratically-elected government. It would probably have been overthrown anyway by the mullahs, and then Iran would, eventually, have had a secular revolution against them, like the one that keeps trying to happen now.

But we became the bad guys. (Blame it on the British, who wanted to keep their oil wells there. The hysterical prime minister of Iran, who could probably have gotten the same good deal the Arabs did from American oil companies, didn't help.)

These Lefties have it about right:

They waited until Carter couldn't claim credit.

LOL!

I thought he was Khomeini
Nah, it was the Shah. Carter even praised his regime. Sort of out of character for Carter, but that's what he did. (Remember, the Shah -- and his father -- were actually sort-of supporters of women's rights, for which they made some reforms. They wanted a modern country.
But he was a dictator, and seen as an American puppet. Here's a good summary:
['Overly focused on their bodies': Why Iranian women are rising up — again ]

Sadly, Islam was and is still a big force in that country, and they headed the opposition to the Shah. The Left, all over the world, cheered the Iranian Revolution, despite the fact that it was led by medieval Islamo-fascists. Suicidally naive.

So Nixon split the scene?

They made a deal with Carter after they already had one with Reagan?
