I know of one person who was able to make that defense and was acquitted.

The cops were outnumbered 100 to 1, and although they tried to push back, there was nothing they could do. It’s hard to imagine someone attending the riot, seeing the violence, seeing the rioters attacking cops, seeing cops using pepper spray and tear gas, seeing rioters breaking windows and doors, and thinking to themselves “I’m allowed to be here”. One would have to be truly delusional to ignore everything going on.

Being delusional is not a criminal defense.

For a praying grandmother, she got caught in her trial telling quite a number of lies. Probably why a jury convicted her on all charges. One of her lies was about what you point out, that she thought it was ok to enter because a cop at the door didn't stop anyone.

But there were 2 lies she told which proved she did know she wasn't allowed in. Here she is at the front line where protesters were fighting with cops over their barricades. The presence of the barricades was an indication she wasn't allowed in. The second lie was she testified she didn't know what happened to the barricades.
