The 5 Southern states. They voted Republican for the first time in 90 years in 1964....because they hated MLK, JFK, LBJ and the Civil Rights movement.
Louisiana:
Johnson got about 20,000 fewer votes in 1964 than JFK in 1960.
Both Dem senators, Allen Ellender and Russell Long, voted against the CRA.
Ellender ran unopposed in 1966, received 100% of the vote. No Republican in the race.
Long got reelected in 1968, received 87% of the vote. No Republican in the race.
Mississippi:
Both Dem senators, James Eastland and John Stennis, voted against the CRA.
Stennis ran unopposed in 1964, received 100% of the vote. No Republican in the race.
James Eastland got reelected in 1966, received 65.5% of the vote. The Republican received 26.7%.
Alabama:
Both Dem senators, Lister Hill and John Sparkman, voted against the CRA.
Sparkman got reelected in 1966, received 60% of the vote.
Hill retired. Replaced by Dem James Allen, Wallace's Lt. Governor, who received 70% of the vote.
Georgia:
Johnson received 64,000 more votes in 1964 than JFK in 1960.
Both Dem senators, Richard Russell and Herman Talmadge, voted against the CRA.
Russell got reelected in 1966, received over 90% of the vote. No Republican in the race.
Talmadge got reelected in 1968, received over 77% of the vote.
South Carolina:
Johnson received 17,000 more votes in 1964 than JFK in 1960.
