I'm not seeing the problem here. 
Denmark has basically ignored Greenland for decades so in my mind if the folks there want to join with the US as a territory they should be able to determine that for themselves.
Since the US has a vested interest in Greenland it would be prudent to push the idea with the inhabitants.
