Bombings in Indonesia Raise Fears of New Religious Strife

TENTENA, Indonesia, May 28 (Reuters) - Two bombs tore through a busy market in a predominantly Christian town in eastern Indonesia on Saturday, killing up to 21 people in an attack that raised fears that sectarian bloodshed could again break out in the region. (Could again break out?!)
The explosions, 15 minutes apart, took place in the lakeside town of Tentena, on the eastern island of Sulawesi, part of an area where three years of Muslim-Christian clashes killed 2,000 people until a peace agreement was reached in 2001.
Periodic unrest has flared since then, but Saturday's attack was among the worst. Tensions rose after the bombings as hundreds of residents converged on the local hospital and the destroyed market, demanding that the police find the bombers.
The official Antara news agency, quoting local government officials, said the death toll was 21. The police said earlier that it was 19. A local hospital official said 32 people were wounded, many seriously.
People in a crowd banged their hands on the local police chief's car when he arrived on the scene soon after the attacks, but there was no further violence. "The situation is getting tense," said Andi Asikin, the mayor of Poso, a town near Tentena.
The roofs of shops near the market were torn off and food and goods scattered over a wide area in Tentena, 900 miles northeast of Jakarta.
Much of the past violence in Sulawesi grew from a conflict involving Muslim militants from groups like Jemaah Islamiyah, a Southeast Asian network accused of many bombing attacks across Indonesia.
