Anarchists damage Pearl District businesses
PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) - Portland Police Chief Mike Marshman and Mayor Charlie Hales addressed the media Friday afternoon, a day after an anarchist group broke off from a peaceful protest and caused significant damage in Northwest Portland.
About 4,000 protesters led by Portland's Resistance peacefully marched throughout the city for several hours, until a group associated with the Anarchist Black Cross Federation joined in on the protest. The situation escalated when several so-called anarchists smashed cars at a NE Broadway dealership, then headed west to the Pearl District, where they broke windows of local businesses and restaurants.
The groups may caused more than $1 million in damages, including $250,000 at the car dealership.

Twenty-five people were arrested by the end of the evening and no serious injuries were reported.
Chief Marshman and Mayor Hales -- along with local activist Micah Rhodes -- decried Thursday night's violent events.
"We tried to keep peaceful protesters away from destructive anarchists," Rhodes said. "We instructed our protesters to the best of our ability not to engage people causing vandalism."
Rhodes added Portland's Resistance plans on having a rally Friday evening, but no march. Both Marshman and Hales told citizens of Portland their free speech and right to protest is encouraged.
"We will get you a permit for a protest route. Our goal is safety, and to make sure folks don't hijack a peaceful protest," Marshman said.
With it being Friday, Mayor Hales encouraged Portlanders to go out and enjoy the evening, whether it involves going to the Trail Blazers game or visiting a neighborhood restaurant.
"Let's keep being good neighbors. Let's go out and enjoy our city. Let's exercise our First Amendment right when we see fit," Hales said.
Portland's Resistance created a GoFundMe account to help businesses damaged in the riots rebuild.
