Recognize the difference between news and opinion

You can't. All news these days is opinion based. The A.P. had a headline today breathlessly claiming "too big to stop, Obama's overhaul lumbers on". It's easy to understand that the story is an op-ed disguised as news and intended to deflect the fact that Obama's overhaul has been declared unconstitutional. No law is "too big" (I hope).
