Really 500 million straws a day? And if your waiter offers a straw he is fined $1,000!

Just to put this in persepctive, the STATE OF CALIFORNIA would like for waiters to be fined $1000 and possibly spend 6 months in PRISON for handing an unrequested drinking straw to a diner.........BUT CALIFONRIA WANTS ALL ILLEGAL ALIENS TO GET FREE HEALTHCARE, EDUCATION, AND WELFARE and CITIZENSHIP........even though they committed a felony.

Summary:

Hand a straw to a restaurant patron....punishment is $1000 fine and 6 months in prison.

Committ a FELONY by immigrating illegally...get thousands of dollars of free shit!

California is FUCKING INSANE.

If you had bothered to read the whole link from the OP, you would have seen that the bill was amended to drop the fines.

You're going bananas for nothing.
Isn’t the bigger point that these left wing nut bags are actually passing straw laws?

th

Those damn straws should be registered with the local law enforcement agencies and only people who have carry permits should be allowed to own them.

*****CHUCKLE*****

Don't disagree the stupidity of the law is even more enhanced by the fallacy of 500,000,000 straws a day statistic!
They based this on a 9 year old kid's survey in 2011!
This is a perfect illustration of how common sense is missing from Moonbeam Brown's going to hell state!
The people I really feel sorry for are those rock ribbed conservatives in California that had Reagan as governor and after he was gone the state really went to hell!

Isn’t the bigger point that these left wing nut bags are actually passing straw laws?
Not really. In fact, in our grandchildren's grandchildren's time, the ideas to limit our use of plastics will be seen as being on the correct side of history. They're the ones who will get to dig out of the pile of plastic.

Calderon, the Democratic majority leader in California's lower house, has introduced a bill to stop sit-down restaurants from offering customers straws with their beverages unless they specifically request one. Under Calderon's law, a waiter who serves a drink with an unrequested straw in it would face up to 6 months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.

"We need to create awareness around the issue of one-time use plastic straws and its detrimental effects on our landfills, waterways, and oceans," Calderon explained in a press release.

Democrats saving the world from soppy straws

More fake headlines from the Trump brigade!
/----/ What's fake about it? California Considers $1,000 Fine for Waiters Offering Unsolicited Plastic Straws

Well before they combined the multiple threads you headline claimed it was already happening, even the title of this thread implies that the law is already in effect, despite it is just the idea of one guy and has not even been debated yet.

OK... 50 million customers using 1 straw is 1/10th of the 500,000,000! Don't you find that just a little off?
Not really, no. That is only daily fast food customers.
so 50 million fast food, 20 million juice 70 million! 14% of the 500 million!

yep.... keep going.... don't forget waste... don't forget stirrer straws....

I calculated 70 million a day between fast food and juice straws.
So that would leave 430,000,000 per day to be thrown away and stir straws.
Remember the issue is MANUFACTURED straws were used to come to the 500,000,000 figure per day.
And that number is grossly inflated based on the facts:
Between two linked sources I provided they produced an average of 6 billion straws a year.

YET Here is the annual production of the D&W also holds the title as the largest drinking straw manufacturer in North America, says Clay Davis, senior vice president. The company churns out 22 million straws a day – roughly 3,000 cases – in the Fountain Inn plant alone, distributing throughout the U.S. and Canada. D&W Fine Pack’s customers include food powerhouses such as Sysco, U.S. Foods and many national chain restaurants as well as school systems across the country.
Inside D&W Fine Pack - Upstate Business Journal NOTE the LARGEST manufacturer produces 8 billion straws a year!
So we know the largest does 8 billion a year and the article about the Virginia plant does 4 billion... or an average between the two of 6 billion a year.
15 straw manufacturers at 6 billion each year is a total of 90 billion a year! That is still less then the 182.6 billion the 9 year old kid's survey which is the basis of
many stupid dumb inaccurate stories saying 500,000,000 straws a day!
Again... explain the discrepancy between the two numbers.
Remember the 9 year old kid's survey said 182 billion straws were manufactured in 2011 which totally contradicts the experience of the other 13 straw manufacturers.
AGAIN do the simple math... If the largest does 8 billion and another known manufacturer does 4 billion that is an average between the two of 6 billion x 13 other manufacturers
is a total of 78 billion by 13 manufacturers added to the known 12 billion and that comes up to 90 billion straws a year... NOT what the 9 year old kid reported of 182 billion!

2 straws per per person per day! Everyday!
Oh yes, easily that much. Every refill...new straw. And the waste.... I ordered stock for a restaurant, and it was almost baffling. We went through easily 10 times as many straws as people we served.

Anecdotal story! You are making your experience the rule and not the exception.
A) babies can't use straws.
B) some old people can't use straws.
C) Not all restaurants provide straws.

500,000,000 x 365.25 days in a year is 182,625,000,000 billion a year.

Va Plant Produces 4B Drinking Straws Annually
The above article states this company produces 4 billion straws a year.

The below link counts 15 companies in the USA that make straws.
15 companies times 4 billion per company is 60 billion straws.
https://www.manta.com/mb_35_E829002W_000/straws_drinking_made_from_purchased_material
The 60 billion straws PRODUCED is only 32% of the purported 182.6 Billion straws used!

It doesn't make sense!

The number is not accurate when it was based on a survey done by a 9 year old kid!

It's one way of a start, to get rid of the 6,000 petroleum items used by oil. :lmao:

Golfing Gator has already told you guys that this hasn't been passed into law yet.

And..................if you would bother to read the OP's link, at the bottom it says that the bill has been amended to get rid of the fines.

No...................waiters aren't going to have to pay a fine of 1,000 per straw.

Fantastic. So by then the US can be taken over by an invading force armed with sporks and these kids will be too traumatized to fight back.

I'm saying that you guys are freaking out for no reason. No, waiters aren't going to have to pay a fine because the bill has been amended so that there are no fines.

And, if there are no fines, what is there to worry about?

California Considers $1,000 Fine for Waiters Offering Unsolicited Plastic Straws

The actual number of straws being used is unclear. Calderon, along with news outlets writing about this issue—from CNN to the San Francisco Chronicle—unfailingly state that Americans use 500 million plastic straws a day, many of them ending up in waterways and oceans. The 500 million figure is often attributed to the National Park Service; it in turn got it from the recycling company Eco-Cycle.

Eco-Cycle is unable to provide any data to back up this number, telling Reason that it was relying on the research of one Milo Cress. Cress—whose Be Straw Free Campaign is hosted on Eco-Cycle's website—tells Reason that he arrived at the 500 million straws a day figure from phone surveys he conducted of straw manufacturers in 2011, when he was just 9 years old.
California Considers $1,000 Fine for Waiters Offering Unsolicited Plastic Straws

Consider this have you used two straws today? Today, and everyday you've been alive.
500,000,000 divided by 230,000,000 Americans is 2 straws per day. Everyday.
Oh and by the way this fine of $1,000 is based on a phone survey by a 9 year old.

Why doesn't California ban plastic one time use forks and spoons, speacily in prisons and use metal ones ?

:)

That's because people with no morals grab handfulls of them and take them home....along with sugar, boat loads of napkins and anything else on the tables or within reach they can steal.

They just figured the fine was a bridge too far... for now. But get the law on the books then ramp up the penalties later. I don’t know how old you are but do you remember how seat belt laws began?
