I agree with this post completely. The more I learn about Ike and Ronnie, the more I'm surprised that Reagan is the so called Conservative that "Conservatives" look up to instead of Ike.

I was stationed in Alaska from 81-83. We went and trained with the AK National guard up in Kotzebue. We bunked down at an air force Early Warning Defense Station. It was a tiny lil' outpost with two huge radar domes, and a couple of small barracks buildings. Underneath one of the building was a one lane bowling alley and small bar for the AF personnel. On the walls of the bar, it was covered in pictures, like wallpaper, of AF fighters escorting soviet migs out of US airspace over the Bering Straight. The threat in the 80's WAS very real. People just don't understand. Or, they understand, but for political reasons don't want to admit it. Reagans accomplishments in that area were huge for this great country. At no time did the soviets fear a US president like they did Reagan. And we are much better off for it![/QUOTE]

A defining moment regarding the Reagan/Soviet relationship was when Reagan fired the air traffic controllers. The Soviets were stunned that an American president would have the spine to do such a thing - politics be damned.

When Reagan walked out of talks with Gorbachev - to the dismay of many in Reagan's own circle, the Soviets were again astounded at how tough this President with the sunny disposition truly was. Reagan countered that Gorbachev would be back - and Reagan was once again proven right. His natural instincts were a far greater asset than all the egghead policy wonks in the beltway could muster.

The fall of the Soviet Union then led to what was known as the "Peace Divident" - the primary tool by which America briefly enjoyed balanced budgets. The Clinton economy was simply an extension of the Reagan economy - particularly when the conservatives took control during the midterm elections.

Ronald Reagan was indeed the greatest of America's post-WWII presidents...

And anybody who thinks differently is completely clueless, regardless of political bent.

I'm truly proud to say I served under that great man.

He was the only figure in my lifetime I have truly considered "My President".

I kept his picture proudly displayed behind my desk in my college office - much to the dismay of some of my liberal-leaning colleagues!

I'm not looking for thanks. And yes, Eisenhower was a great president. I was born in '64, but history has tought me that much.

My point is that Reagan brought down the soviet threat with civility, strength, and huge god damn balls. He brought this country back from the stigma of Vietnam and Korea. Showed that this great country isn't just going to lay down based on threats and past failures. That is the mark of a great president, and what this country needs now. Republican, democrat or whatthefuckever!

Ike displayed considerable abilities in both the military and political challenges during WWII. As President, he was persistent in leading a regular 9-to-5 work schedule, and made time to enjoy life outside the demands of the White House. Much responsibility was given to his White House staff in doing the heavy work of implimenting an agenda. Again, liberals scorned Eisenhower for this, believing him to be both lazy and lacking intellectual curiosity - the very things the liberals would attempt to portray Reagan as a some 20 years later.

Both Reagan and Eisenhower had natural instincts that allowed them to seek a solution without requiring the uncertainty that plagues leaders of lesser confidence. And where Eisenhower practiced the policy that would become known as containment, Reagan sought to end the conflict altogether by bringing what he sensed to be a weakening Soviet Union to its knees. Again the liberal elite scoffed at Reagan, claiming the Soviet Union would outlive all of them, and that his aggressive anti-Soviet stance was endangering the world. The term "dumb cowboy" became quite common.

In the end, Reagan outlived the Soviet Union - and was able to travel to parts of the world where millions were undergoing the transformative impacts of new-found freedom.

I had the pleasure of having a student from a former Eastern Bloc country who was able to then go to school in America. The subject of Reagan came up and this student, who had been mostly quiet in class to that point, raised his hand amidst a packed lecture hall and when called, spoke of Reagan with the eloquence of one whose family had known life under the oppression of communism.

Ronald Reagan and Dwight Eisenhower were both great Americans - the kind of leaders this country is sorely lacking now...

Because most of Ike's constituents have already died off. The popularity poll is a moving target itself, at the beck & call of those who are alive and know history. That eliminates a huge percentage since many people cannot think or do not care about....history. Or politics. Or what's going on in the world. They are only concerned with how many of these $$$$$$$ they have in their accounts.

Not surprisingly, there are different partisan leanings towards best and worst president. Over half of Republicans (53%) say Ronald Reagan is the best president since World War II followed by 14% who say it is Franklin Roosevelt. Democrats are more divided. Over one-quarter say the best president is Franklin Roosevelt (28%) while 22% say it is Bill Clinton and 20% say it is John Kennedy. Among Independents, 27% say Ronald Reagan is the best president and 26% say it is Franklin Roosevelt.

When it comes to worst president, Democrats are more united; over half of them (53%) say it is George W. Bush with one in ten (11%) saying Richard Nixon. Three in ten Republicans (31%) say Barack Obama is the worst president followed by two in ten (19%) who say it is Jimmy Carter and one in ten (10%) who say Bill Clinton. Yup - the Beltway intellectuals have long harbored resentment of "common America".

The sad thing is, this resentment has heavily permeated both major political parties for some time now.

Reagan's ascent to the heights of DC politics was strongly protested by many of the so-called Rockefeller Republicans who found Reagan to be unworthy of their serious attention. Not until Reagan's transformative election in 1980 did they begin to flock to where the power was - the common-America Reagan came from, admired, and respected.

The same anti-common America sentiment that Reagan fought against during his own rise to the presidency, now controls the leadership of the Democrat Congress and the White House.

Awareness of this is finally taking hold among the electorate though - and Reaganism is once again pushing back the tide of Big Government liberalism in America...

it's called a soldier's life by carlo d'este. coincidentally, he also wrote an excellent bio of patton (a genius for war) and churchill (warlord, a life of winston churchill at war), all of which i've read and highly recommend.

And what do you know, I'm going to Borders in the near future. Got three new books to get.

And although it's slightly bias to say the least, I enjoyed reading all of "The Second World War" and it's six volumes by Churchill.

I have read the books on Eisenhower and Churchhill but not the one on Patton. Will have to see if my local library has it.

You won't be disappointed. Both are very, very good reads.

When RR was running for President the first time I wasn't interested in him at all. AFter ll. He was just an actor. I couldn't possibly look on this man as a President.

When he ran the second time I payed attentioin and liked what I saw and heard. A man with a sense of humor. A man who seemed to have ability. I took a chance and I voted for him the second time and the third and never regretted those votes I cast for this "Actor".

Was he perfect?? Hell no. But what President is? All I know is that the country boomed. The cold war ended and RR had no problem defending this country and PC wasn't part of his vocabulary. Ghadafi in Libya was scared shitless of him. When he took office Iran released the American Citizens they had been holding, Fidel knew he meant buisiness as did the Russians. A President with balls.

In my humble opinion he was the greatest president since WWII.

But opinions are like assholes. Everyone's got one. This one is mine.
