read this before you listen to teacher protest news

40k a year isn't a lot of money anywhere. Especially not for babysitting hundreds of children each day.
40K, total health coverage, a third of the year is vacation, and it's a job where results literally do not matter (read: there is no way to do the job wrong). In other words, you can be utterly retarded and have this job.

40K sounds GREAT!

Vacation? Teachers do not get vacations and it damn sure isn't close to one-third of a year off. This year we are looking at about 6 weeks.

Total health coverage? Bzzzzztt!!!! Wrong answer! Try again!

If you can be retarded and do this job, why aren't you? Are you a college graduate? Can you pass a test on teaching methods? Can you pass subject area tests for every subject you teach?

Bet you can't!

Six weeks? Teachers get 2+ months just in the summer not to mention fall break, Christmas break and spring break. That's 3+ months a year. Then there are teacher no-work days

if the news report doesn't give you salary information when they cry about teacher wages...then it's socialist propaganda.

40k is a lot of money in MooseJaw Iowa.

They ACT like they care about the classroom, put duct tape on books and go out into the street and beg for money.

Socialist alliance so they can work 20 years and get public money for the rest of their life.

I made more than $50 grand waiting tables.

Had pretty good benefits, too.

Eh? You haven't heard of summer vacation?

6 weeks is more than I've seen in most private sector jobs. 3 weeks is what I've been seeing. That and teachers get lots more holidays off than many private sector jobs.

Is it a lot for those with Masters Degrees and Professional credentials? Doctors, Lawyers? other Masters level professionals? After about 20 year careers?

That's doubtful pretty much anywhere. If you did, you know how rare that would be.

However, as a waiter, you probably worked a lot more hours and a lot more of the year than teachers do. They are failing. We have the most expensive schools in the west with the worst results. We need to start cutting pay, not increasing it, until we start getting our money's worth

I'll admit it was a particularly good server job. It was unionized.

How do you expect to recruit better teachers with less pay?

Because cutting pay always motivates employees to do a better job.

Begging the question. Who said the solution is attracting "better teachers?"

Who said the solution to doing that is better pay?

And also where do you get that it's cheaper to live in Europe than here since they are spending less and getting better results?

You're making ridiculously flagrant assumptions.

But they don't get benefits.

I worked in a Chili's in the Oakland Airport.

UFCW member, full Kaiser, generous vacation and sick days. Plus, it was almost impossible to get fired.

And I'd make a grand a week, cash in hand.

Kinda miss it, actually.

They give it to them precisely because teachers are not needed. In many inner cities, it's just daycare for the retarded inner city minority dwellers. Teaching jobs are little more than make-work to make it seem like the city isn't completely filled with worthless leeches and keep the minorities off the streets so they don't rape, rob, and murder as much. Since they produce next to nothing, there's little benefit to having teachers needlessly occupy space on the roads and sidewalk.

Who said we should cut pay? You and the doctor are both debating the voices in your head.

I said Houston we have a problem. We're getting the worst results for the most money of our peers. We need to figure out what's going on. The two of you are stuck on teacher pay. But we sure as shit shouldn't be raising pay until we figure out what's going wrong

You did. Did you forget already?

I'll give you a hint - it's in the "quotes" in this very post. I've highlighted it for you.

40k is not a lot of money, even in MooseJaw Iowa. Insurance, with its high deductable and high premiums are the same around the nation. And, the fact is that new teachers don't make the $40k. That's the average between the first year teacher and the administrators.
