Radon Detectors: What?

Ok, then it makes no sense. Be very suspicious! Seriously.
I am getting suspicious.
Radon is only tested on the ground floor, the first floor....it doesn't rise and linger on higher floors so it is never tested on them.
Now I wish I would have written this thread on the day those things were put in my flat.
I've had two homes tested. One had radon beyond legal level....one tested in the finished basement, the other the ground first floor. Remediation 20 years ago, cost us $950.
Holy shit! Do you think they serve a good purpose?

As with all meters I would check for other reasons and therefore ulterior information/ motives.
Probably fine at face value , but I never trust anybody for anything .

QUOTE
Radon detectors are devices used to measure radon gas levels in homes and buildings, helping prevent long-term health risks from this invisible radioactive gas.

What

Radon is a naturally occurring, colorless, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas formed from the decay of uranium in soil and rocks. It can accumulate indoors, particularly in basements and lower levels, and long-term exposure is linked to lung cancer, making detection essential for home safety. The EPA recommends testing homes at least once a year, and action is advised if levels reach or exceed 4 pCi/L
He lives on the third floor. Radon is only tested on the ground floor to get an accurate reading of the radon level vs the govt approval level at ground level inside the building.

Makes ZERO sense to have detectors put on his third floor...it's useless.

And also does not make sense to put two of them in the same apartment. Only 1 is needed and used.....

So yes yes and yes.....his situation is weird, to say the least....

I'm learning a lot today. I am going to ask my neighbours what they think ... something I should have done long before now.

My home in Maine is built on a crawl space and our level of radon is high, one decimal point from needing remediation by law.... We are planning on spending the money to do it.

Homes are built on a granite bed rock up here, and from my understanding granite leaches both radon in to the air, and arsenic in to the water....we have high levels of arsenic too but we have a special water treatment system to remove it.
Limestone here in the Valley....Lots and lots of limestone. Granite up on the ridges.

Hell in the winter I could see a limestone quarry from my house.

The downside of limestone is caverns opening up when you least expect it.

I was emptying a catch basin at DuPont one morning and the water up and disappeared into a cavern that opened up in the drainage ditch. It cost DuPont a mint to seal it off.

It's safe to rip radon detectors open.... It should be just a simple film of plastic that radon adheres to....not even close to enough to harm you....if you see anything mechanical/electrical then someone is spying on you imho. I can't imagine why? maybe the radon remediation worker doing the testing, didn't know what he was doing???

On your recommendation I opened one of them. Not much there. A lot of open space and a thin, clear plastic, flat rectangle. I don't know if it was "lying" there before I opened it but I just gave the other one a shake and it does rattle so I suppose it does just "lay" there. What the hell is it?

That's I was thinking when you said it is only good on the lowest floor and only one needed.

They are a testing device for radon and useless now, since it is past 7 days....throw them out....and ask your landlord if he ordered this testing.

Are you in a ground floor apartment/flat?
Some are designed for longer than that-30 or so.

That plastic film collects radon air particles, it goes in to a machine that analyzes how many radon particles it has on it for however many hours they ran the exposure test. The test can run between 2 and 7 hours (the container has to be in the testing area between 2-7hrs) with this particular test model from what Google said.

When I opened it up the plastic chip fell out and I had to pick it up and put it back. I wonder if my finger prints will be a problem.

I live in a flat in the city. Several months ago a man came and placed two Radon Detectors. He said he’d come back in February to get them. I never heard of them but well if the landlord required them ….. so OK. February is now past and the things are still here. I looked it up on Google and still don’t really understand what they are for and my imagination is starting play games with me. What do you people have to say about them?

We live in an area where folks still are wanting to mine uranium ergo radon is a concern for many. I, however, choose to be oblivious to it rather than pay money for detecting something I can't do a damn thing about anyway. If the vapor barrier doesn't block it, so be it. If one thing doesn't get me, something else will so why fret about it.

The test can not be run. You spoiled nothing that was not already spoiled and unable to be used. It is suppose to be put in an area that has no traffic, away from any inside wind of passerbys, and no windows opened, and only left out in your home for 2 -7 days.....

Your contraptions are way past being useable.

I don't like being spied upon or my opinions recorded. I still believe that Democracy is important. I also suspected that my wife was cheating on me so I made an effort to find out. I was right so I left her. Should I not have been concerned enough to make the effort to detect the truth? Everyone has to decide for himself if knowing the truth is worth it.

Health impacts

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths in the United States after cigarette smoke. The EPA and the Surgeon General's office estimate radon is responsible for more than 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States.

When you breathe in radon, radioactive particles from the decay of radon gas can get trapped in your lungs. It takes many years for lung cancer to develop. Most people don't have symptoms until lung cancer is advanced and at that point it is harder to treat. For these reasons, it is important to take steps to reduce radon exposure throughout your life to help prevent lung cancer.

Well getcha a radon detector and a carbon monoxide detector as well. Just keep em in a Faraday cage so the EMP's don't ruin them.

So you spied on her and that was ok? You just shot your argument in the leg by accident.
