I live in a flat in the city. Several months ago a man came and placed two Radon Detectors. He said he’d come back in February to get them. I never heard of them but well if the landlord required them ….. so OK. February is now past and the things are still here. I looked it up on Google and still don’t really understand what they are for and my imagination is starting play games with me. What do you people have to say about them?

Back in the 1980s, they pedaled those things. It's supposed to detect Radon gas, don't become afraid of it. Just once in a while, open all doors and windows and air out your flat. I am not saying it's a scam, just not necessary.

Radon mitigation is required in every new home we build and required in remodeling jobs being put on the market.
It's added several thousand to the cost of a house.

Just another costly government mandate passed on to the consumer.

Thanks to both of you. I feel better now. :11_2_1043:

Radon gas was one of a multitude of "scares" the statist lefties were trying to peddle as a legit human threat in an attempt to increase the size of g'ment back in the early 80's. The statist left keep recycling their old "scares" among the newer "scares" that they conjure up to fuel their addiction of power & control(PC) big g'ment.

It's just small microphone and radio transmitter. Nothing to worry about.

Radon is a thing in many areas. My mother's house has a radon abatement system-very common in New England, with lots of granite bedrock.

They are a testing device for radon and useless now, since it is past 7 days....throw them out....and ask your landlord if he ordered this testing.

Are you in a ground floor apartment/flat?

And how do I know if it is recording my my political expression?

That's not possible.

he's kidding

But radon is a thing and can be a problem. Here's from Search Assist (AI)

Radon is a colorless, odorless, and radioactive gas that occurs naturally from the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and groundwater. It can seep into homes and buildings, and long-term exposure to high levels of radon is a significant health risk, as it is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.

That's interesting.

I am thinking about doing that.

Maybe I should do that before/or instead of throwing them out.

No, I'm on the third floor.
Ok, then it makes no sense. Be very suspicious! Seriously.

Radon is only tested on the ground floor, the first floor....it doesn't rise and linger on higher floors so it is never tested on them.

I've had two homes tested. One had radon beyond legal level....one tested in the finished basement, the other the ground first floor. Remediation 20 years ago, cost us $950.

Back in the day a lot of smaller homes (starter homes) were built on crawl spaces and it could be a thing if the space under the home was not vented.....Or so we were told.

As with all meters I would check for other reasons and therefore ulterior information/ motives.
Probably fine at face value , but I never trust anybody for anything .

Radon detectors are devices used to measure radon gas levels in homes and buildings, helping prevent long-term health risks from this invisible radioactive gas.

What

Radon is a naturally occurring, colorless, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas formed from the decay of uranium in soil and rocks. It can accumulate indoors, particularly in basements and lower levels, and long-term exposure is linked to lung cancer, making detection essential for home safety. The EPA recommends testing homes at least once a year, and action is advised if levels reach or exceed 4 pCi/L

My home in Maine is built on a crawl space and our level of radon is high, one decimal point from needing remediation by law.... We are planning on spending the money to do it.

Homes are built on a granite bed rock up here, and from my understanding granite leaches both radon in to the air, and arsenic in to the water....we have high levels of arsenic too but we have a special water treatment system to remove it.
