They may have an easy time proving their case-in-chief and spend most of their time defending or trying to disprove a self-defense claim, but they have the burden to prove the crime first.

Moron, the crime you're being charged with in this scenario is likely murder. To make their case the prosecution only has to connect you to the murder weapon and the weapon to the body. If you admit to shooting the person, that makes their job even easier. I don't know if you know this but it's illegal to shoot people. They arrest you for that. You can claim self-defense but their job is done when they prove you killed a guy. After that it's on you to prove that killing was justified or you're going to be convicted.

There need to be a lot more facts released before I will have an opinion on this particular shooting. I would need to see trajectories of the bullets, vehicle relationships on the roadway etc.

The defended can raise a defense and call witnesses and present evidence, but the prosecution still must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defense scenario did not happen.

The prosecution only needs to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you killed someone, not that you killed someone and that it wasn't in self defense. That would be asking the prosecution to prove a negative. The government, the court and the jury isnt inclined to take your word that you had a really good reason for doing so. You must prove it.

I don't know that I necessarily agree. If it was just yelling slurs at them, then yes, but if they were trying to run him off the road that can almost be looked at as attempted murder. These road ragers and people who fuck around like this on the road slamming their break in front of you or purposely cutting into your lane to scare you and force you over can kill someone.
