The NPS warned hikers about quicksand in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, especially near shorelines and drainages where ground can look dry but give way.

You have been warned......

Lordy-lord.....Lots of $200 handcarts will be lost!

Yes sir....Some people have been preparing their whole lives for this!

Quicksand is fairly common in the deserts of the southwest. It's usually only 2-3 feet deep. But in a lake filled with sediment, it can be much deeper, hence the warning for Lake Powell which is almost empty, exposing the quicksand at the bottom.
What is worse than quicksand?
Radioactive quicksand!!!!
The Rio Puerco has many areas of quicksand, and due to the accident in 1979 is contaminated with radioactive material from Shiprock NM all the way to Milky Wash AZ in the Petrified Forest NP.
So for about 80 miles there is the potential for radioactive quicksand!!!!
Be very very afraid.

Now you have gone and done it and ramped quicksand fears up a notch! :laughing0301:

LOL Quicksand is no danger to a person that has a brain. And it is far more common than people think. It is a granular substance, sand or mud, with water between the particles to the point that it won't support anything heavy on the surface. So you sink in it. But not that deeply. Because it is much denser than your body you cannot sink in it. You sure can lose denser metallic material in it, and it can trap animals so that they die of thirst. But all one has to do is lean back and work their way out. Personal experience.
