I have a question for you Canadian chatters about your penny which was discontinued in 2012. Do you still have pennies widely in circulation 13 years later? Do you still get them in change from stores? I want to see what will be the effect here of our discontinuation of the penny. It matters to me because in my volunteer activities, I get tons of pennies, and it's very time-consuming to roll them.

They don't exist in circulation. Meaning from my standpoint, at no transaction point will a cashier give me a penny or five pennies back because they don't exist for all intents and purposes.

I wish I would have kept the 1 and 2 dollar bills but even then. they are still in high abundance for the forseeable future, the supply will always probably be high to some degree for the next 100 years or more since people all thought the same at the time, "let me change this $500 into 500 $1 bills and one day I will be rich!" I have a few pennies that were just lying around. In time, they will of course be worth more but nothing compared to the bills that were discontinued.

Meh, I remember Gretzkys rookie card was going for $900 mint when I was in university. I can't tell you how much more that card is worth today. I still have a second year card of his, meh.

I get pennys in change and throw them in a bucket

I cash them in but never spend them
If I carry coins in my pocket, it is always quarters
Never pennys, nickels or dimes

I keep a few quarters and dimes in my car ashtray for the parking meters that still take them.

So are taxes computed to the nearest five cents?

To be honest, I've never thought of that. I don't think so. It is to the penny but if I went to the cashier and took out $100.02 from my account assuming that was my tax rebate, they would probably give me $100 and a nickel, or, they'd tell me, "we can give you $100" and the remaining two cents would stake in the account in that form.

I throw Pennies and nickels and dimes in the trash in the rare case I’m using cash and get change. Or tell the cashier I don’t need change

I really like the option to round up for some charity so that you don’t get any coins back at all

Don’t need the clutter

/----/ Why are you rolling them? My credit union won't accept rolled coins. They have a coin machine; you just pour the coins in, it counts them, gives you a receipt, and you then hand it to the teller for either cash or as a deposit.
