President Trump expresses his desire to add Russia back to the G7 - which was kicked out after they invaded Crimea. He is going to be an awesome negotiating partner for Ukraine with Russia, isn't he?

President Trump said Thursday he would like to see Russia reinstated in the Group of Seven (G7) major economies and suggested various actors other than Moscow were to blame for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Trump fielded questions in the Oval Office on his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the situation in Ukraine as his administration pushes for negotiations to end the war there.

He pointed the finger at former President Biden and at Russia’s 2014 ouster from the Group of Eight (G8) as factors that may have led to the conflict.

“I’d like to have them back. I think it was a mistake to throw them out. Look, it’s not a question of liking Russia or not liking Russia,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office when asked about readmitting Russia to the G7. “I think Putin would love to be back.”

Trump similarly suggested in 2018 that Russia be allowed to rejoin the alliance.

Trump raised the possibility that Russia’s expulsion from the G8 in 2014 over its illegal annexation of Crimea may have been a reason Moscow launched its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

What if that is a condition of the peace treaty? Would you oppose it then?

I'm not sure of what benefit America gets by allowing Putin back into the G8, nor this decision without any preconditions as far as we know back in 2017.

In chess this is referred to as "wasting a tempo". I was going to give a lengthy explanation but essentially if you have a piece pinned to a king and it cannot move, you force them at minimum to move their pawn first before you make the exchange (the Ruy Lopez opening is a great example of this). If Trump is just gifting Putin re-entry he is not forcing Putin to waste a tempo first before making the exchange.

Now we aren't privy to backroom discussions but this doesn't seem particularly advantageous. Trump needs to negotiate hard and with purpose in government as he did/would in his personal business negotiations. That's why he is there.

Perhaps it is a feigned sweetener to get Putin to come to an agreement in Ukraine? Still doesn't explain the 2017 offer though so I'm a bit confused.

Trump does not seem capable of negotiating harshly with Putin

He's going to have to or he will look like a weak sucker on the world stage. This is not just bad for America but also his legacy. I have to think he has a plan or an ideal outcome in this instance.

We have no idea what the negotiating points are. The media certainly isn't going to report honestly. They will all point to what Putin is getting, without any mention of what he's giving. This is by design. It's so they can say Trump is a poor negotiator.

Obama should have never booted them out... just another blunder by Obama... is anyone keeping track?....

trump needs to give his pal a gift. I am pretty sure Poootin can buy any classifed information he wants from his pawn. trump. If not, he can find it on trump's bathroom floor in Mar a lugo.

Trump continues to coddle dictators and attack our allies.

Russia is an adversary of the United States; Putin is a war criminal – Trump is blinded by his love for despots and strongmen.
If Poootin comes to the US, to meet his butt buddy trump, he needs to be arrested.

If it means they will no longer kill innocent people why not? Millions have died in this crazy war due to Biden incompetence

Trump will always be Putin’s useful idiot.

Putin is a war criminal and the felon invites him to join G 7

Tough to negotiate harshly with a side holding militarily the land you want them to give back.
Putin bit off more than he can chew in Ukraine

Trump is offering a lifeline

He's winning.

3 years and the Russian economy hasn't collapsed, the Ukrainians haven't regained the territory they want.
