The linked Opinion article gives the facts and statistics of what Our Beloved President refers to as, "the Deep State," citing party identification numbers to explain why, when a Democrat is elected we have a unified government - the Deep State being fully supportive - but when a Republican is elected, we have a bureaucracy that is hostile to the platform of the elected Administration. This phenomenon was addressed in Project 2025, with suggestions for removing high-level Democrat-leaning bureaucrats with non-political or Conservative executives. This was merely a pipe dream, however; civil service protections are much too strong for such a comprehensive campaign. But it does explain much of what Trump and the DOGE team are doing now.

Something not mentioned in the article (and something with which I am quite familiar) is the shift in the type of people who seek out government employment over the past few decades. It used to be that all levels of government - in the "professional" categories - government employment attracted people who (sorry for the stereotyping) graduated at or near the bottom of their college classes, and wanted a career with gobs of worker protections, little stress, a 40-hour work week, good benefits and early retirement. In exchange for all these good things, they accepted pay that was somewhat lower than their counterparts got in the private sector. Of course, they could not have gotten those jobs in the private sector, but whatever.

Now we have people seeking public sector employment because they want to rule the world, or at least have a part in ruling the world. This is why we see the predominance of Democrats in agencies like the EPA, State Department, and USAID.

The only thing I don't like about what Trump and DOGE are doing is that they cannot go as far as is necessary to get the job done. But they should be lauded for their noble and aggressive attempt.

This week, the three sources told NBC News, career employees at high managerial levels, namely Senior Executive Service and General Schedule 15 employees, may be removed from agencies across DHS -- not to reduce the size of the workforce but to remove employees whom the administration sees as potentially standing in the way of goals the Trump administration has for the agency.

DHS, which includes Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is the primary agency tasked with enforcing U.S. immigration law. Trump has relied heavily on CBP to secure the southwest border and on ICE to ramp up arrests and deportations of undocumented immigrants living in the United States.

Charles adds:

A former senior Biden administration official told NBC News that those targeted "are career people who have an influence on policy and strategy in those positions."
An official in the current administration argued that the individuals who will be released "willfully grind things to halt" when it comes to enacting President Trump's agenda -- especially as it pertains to immigration policy.

Since medical science has still not produced a cure for Trump Derangement Syndrome, it is reasonable to speculate that there are still people within the executive branch who might not be as keen on carrying out the wishes of the chief executive.

If this is the case, Trump is making a smart move here. Yes, it will make the pearl clutchers in the legacy media destroy even more pearl necklaces. But at the end of the day, a president cannot do his job when those under him are hellbent on stopping him.
